I bought this when my trusty HP41 from the 80s finally gave out. Its the least expensive RPN calculator I could find. It does the basics and the financial calculations work just like they did on the HP41's standard applications pack - which is exactly what I was after. The keys are not nearly as nice as my old calculator's but they work adequately.

Least expensive RPN calculator

I always used HP calculator so I was looking for RPN mode calculator. This is the least expensive one I could find. Acutally, the calculator can be operated in any of the three modes. Chain calculation where 2 + 3 *2 results in 10 or Algebraic mode where 2 + 3 * 2 results in 8 or RPN mode with which you need to do 2 <input> 3 <input> 2 * + to get 8. Out of th box, it is set in chain mode. By the way, the package was little easier to open than most blister package. Datasheet stated two line display, but numbers are only shown in one line. The upper line shows functions and operators only. Numbers are shown with 7 segment display and easy to read. Top line for other information is dot matrix display + several annunciators. Keys(buttons) Plus : All financial keys are arranged in top two rows and easy to access. Bonus: Trigonometry and other math functions are also available althoug you first need to use "shift" key to access them. Therefore, although this is a "business" calculator, You should be able to do most of math works too. Other observation : Keys does not have traditional HP quality and feel. There is no click, but they are not mushy either so I can live with it. At least there are big "INPUT" key (Why didnt they call this "Enter" key?) at top left of the number pad keys. This gives the machine distinctive HP look. Comparing to HP-12C, there is no wait on solving financial calculations. You dont see "running" flash on the display. Solutions are instantly shown on the display. Use of newer technology is evident. What's missing : No user definable solver application. No programming capability. For those I suppose you have to buy more expensive models. Style : Surface is glossy. The bottom part is sculptured like a cheap ashtray. I dont think I like this implementation. The calculator comes with a small booklet of about 90 pages. going through it and you should be able to understand what this calculator can do for you. As always, there are more training modules available from HP site to brush up your "calculator skill" I will give five starts if the styling was more attractive, but the job will be get done with this calculator.

Cheap

The overall calculator has a lightweight and cheap feel to it. Does not have 'rotate and click' keys like previous models from the 80's. Some keys would rub against plastic surround when pressing. Does have RPN mode but this is not the default. Base of calculator is smaller than top, resulting in unstable feel when pressing keys on the perimeter. Relatively large form factor - not pocket sized. Looks like form won out over function again. Returned it.
