I adore this bread. And have used it for sandwiches (egg salad is my favorite) as well as a side for soups and salads.. it also made great rye croutons. Before the Wichita WalMart I shop at declined their production of this I would stock up on this bread and keep it in the freezer, which worked beautifully. I have requested the bakery department contact me when they have it, but they could not do so. Please Wal Mart bring back my favorite bread to the North Rock Road store. I am begging you Please.
Early August, I picked up two loaves of bread in an attempt to gain a few pounds with non-sugary foods. While the other whole-grain loaf was fine, this was just delicious. I've bought two more loaves since, and finished one quickly. It has a rich flavor that goes with many foods. For bread, it's even ever-so-slightly sweet. It actually has a decent amount of protein also - 7 grams in one slice. I see myself buying this over and over again.
This pumpernickel loaf is reasonably dense, very tasty, and stays fresh for a good while (especially if kept in the refrigerator until ready to slice). I've used it several years for hollowing out and filling with spinach dip for holidays. Unfortunately, the Walmart stores in my area have not had it available for several weeks now - only pumpernickel "sub sandwich" mini-loaves. I hope that Walmart resumes selling the full-sized 16 oz loaves soon!
Though not a true German pumpernickel bread (but of the North American variety), this dark loaf is a delightful romp for the taste buds for us everyday folks. The strong aroma of rye and a hint of sourdough brings one's mouth to water at the anticipation of enjoying each slice. I savor my loaf as warm slices with a smidgen of spicy, brown mustard. Kudos to Wal-Mart from us working blue-collar guys who can appreciate some of the finer details in life.
I am not an employee of Wal-Mart. However I do shop there often. I recently purchased a loaf of pumpernickle bread and took it home with great expectations only to be disappointed it did not have rye bread taste or texture 2 important qualities. It tasted more like artificially flavored and colored Italian bread !!
