My old landscape lights were 11 Watt incandescent bulbs that drew about 1 amp each. They lasted about 3-4 months on average, so had to be replaced 3-4 times a year. The Moonrays use the CREE LEDs that draw about 80 milliamps each, so they're about 10 times more energy efficient. The CREE LEDs are used in high output police flashlights so they heve excellent light output. Typical solar landscape lights have lower output LEDs that are powered from a battery that is charged from the solar cell. Batteries that have to operate in an outdoor environment with temperatures that range from 20 below zero to 90+ degrees F, generally have much shorter lives than those used indoors at room temperature. From my perspective, a wired set of landscape lights represents a nearly ideal combination of energy efficiency, good light output, and long life. To maximize safety it is recommended that the power source be plugged into a GFCI protected outlet. Notice: my attorney recommends that you be advised that your milage may vary.
