It would seem logical that a film as highly regarded and cinematically influential as Sergei Eisenstein's The Battleship Potemkin would receive some sort of quality presentation on DVD, but sadly, that's not the case with the disc from Image Entertainment. Other than a written essay contained on the packaging, there are no supplemental features. A historian's commentary? No. A documentary on where this film fits in cinematic history? Nope. Nothing, and that is clearly a shame. As for the image, there is probably little that can be done for a film from 1925. Even restoration completed in 1976 leaves an image that is good, but certainly shows signs of age. Scratches and dirt are clearly evident, but for the most part, it looks decent. The sound, utilizing a mono track, includes only the orchestration, of course, and is strong. This classic from the silent period of Soviet cinema truly deserves more detail. Hopes run high that it will receive it some day.
