We have a two year old and this was a great alternative to the leap reader tag (which is quite expensive in my opinion). You have to download the books but that's expected. I have to help her scan the page but then she learns to do it on her own. She doesn't realize it's reading the book for her yet but I'm sure after a few more times she'll get it.

This was purchased as a gift for my granddaughter. It is the control device for educational Leapfrog reading books. It is well sized for little hands; it keeps my granddaughter's attention and entices her to hear more, which causes her to obtain and retain more.

I bought this for a 2 and a half year old boy along with the Cars, ToyStory, and Dora Tag Jr. books. This is his first Leapfrog toy. He quickly learned how to turn it off an on. He likes to stick his finger in the hole in the bottom where the "eye" is but this did not damage the toy. His favorite book is Cars, which is about shapes. He will grow into the other books soon and likes to explore with his Tag Jr. The carry case makes an excellent bag to keep all the books and toy in the same place. TIP: I downloaded all the books onto the Tag Jr. before giving them as a gift. This way, the toy is ready to go the moment it is in his/her hands.

Love the idea & the potential for learning is phenomenal...the teacher in me loves that! However, I have to say that I am more than a little bit disappointed that it only has about 8 MB of memory. That is ridiculously low in this day an age of gigabytes!!! We bought him five books(plus the one that came with Scout reader) & the flashcards set, but can only put five things on at a time...really?!?! Crazy low given the amount of things available for this particular item. Not to mention, that you have to go back online to remove/add books, wait for it to download, & now we have to have a separate storage place for the items not currently downloaded or risk frustrating the 20-month-old that can't get all of his books to read to him, when he so chooses:( We'd have gladly paid more for additional memory.

My kids love Tag Junior but Pal needs more memory.

This is our second Tag Junior so we obviously like them. The books are great and both my boys love them. My biggest disappointment has been the lack of memory space. I want to be able to load ALL our books. My boys like to mix it up and it is a pain to have to up load and delete books all the time. They are also chew threw batteries so longer battery life or a rechargeable version would be good.

Only 8MB, really?

Very cool concept, and my daughter and I love how the product works, but are we living in 1999? This product only has 8MB of memory, and can only hold about 4-6 books at a time. So much for building a library that my child can use any time. I will need to "hide" the books that aren't saved into Tag Jr, and swap them out periodically. I'm a techie parent and know that flash memory is dirt cheap and micro small. This product should have had 10x the memory.

This toy is cute. My son calls him puppy. I would love to say that this toy is great. It has nice interactive features, and it had my son's not so common name in its database. But I am a bit disappointed with the memory. It is supposed to hold 5 books, which is already limited, but when I went to load the books I have on the "puppy" he only could hold 4 books. Needless to say I will not be purchasing new books anytime soon, because I do not want to have to plug the toy into the computer every time my son wants to read a new book. This was a gift, and I do like it. I probably would not have purchased it myself as I do not think that the value is there. There are pretty great reading apps for tablets that my son enjoys just as much. They are free. I already have the tablet so it is a better deal for me. If you want your child to have the same experience that a tablet offers but with a physical book, then this would be the closest thing. It is very cute, just not convenient.

Frustratingly low memory

The kids love this product, but it seems very poor design to include only 8MB of memory. I can buy an SD card that could easily hold all the books available on leap reader for a few dollars, but this product can only hold about 4-5 books at a time. So if your children like to read a large variety of books like mine do, you will spend more time on the computer loading and unloading books onto it than your kids will actually using the product. Unfortunately this is the case with next pen too. It also only holds a handful of books.

I love the concept of the book pal BUT the time it takes to download the books, it's not worth it. Only holding five books is disappointing. I bough almost all the books offered not realizing that it only holds 5 books : ( Whats the point in having more than 5 books??
