It contains 5 different colored spheres. Each sphere is a different weight, indicating a different temperature. The cylinder is filled with a special, clear liquid. The spheres rise and fall, based on the temperature of the liquid. The lowest floating sphere in the top portion of the cylinder indicates the current temperature.
