Detailed product description

Name: Corydoras sterbai, also known as Sterba’s Cory Catfish. The name “Cory Catfish” refers to the genus Corydoras. Corydoras are small armored catfish in the family Callichthyidae. Corydoras means “helmet armor” in greek (“cory” = helmet, “doras” = skin/armor). Recommended Enclosure Size: Minimum aquarium size for a small group of these (3-6) would be 10 gallons. Because they like to be in schools, a 20-29 gallon aquarium is a better option for larger groups. Sand or fine gravel substrate is recommended to avoid damaging their sensitive barbels. Temperature: Sterba’s Cory catfish like it a little warmer than some other species of cories. Ideal range is 75-82 degrees fahrenheit, so a quality submersible heater is a must-have. pH/Hardness: A pH somewhere in the slightly acidic to neutral range is best for Corydoras sterbai. Acceptable range is 6.0-7.6. Adding leaf litter and/or blackwater extract can be beneficial and help reduce pH naturally. Size: At the time of sale, Sterba’s Cory Catfish will be at least 0.5.” When fully grown, they will reach approximately 2.5.” Age: Your new cory catfish will be at least 3-4 months old when you buy them. Corydoras catfish can live for many years in captivity, some have even been known to reach 10 years of age! The typical lifespan is 5-7 years. Feeding: Corydoras are omnivorous and will scavenge all sorts of food in an aquarium. Our Corydoras catfish are fed primarily frozen bloodworms and various repashy foods (spawn and grow, soilent green, etc). They may be offered live white worms and blackworms as occasional treats. They should also respond to commercial sinking foods such as shrimp pellets and sinking wafers. Sexing: Until they reach maturity, Corydoras catfish can be a little tricky to sex. The best way to tell is by viewing a group of young adults from above. The females will be noticeably rounder from this angle. Males tend to be slimmer and may have slightly longer fins. Due to their age, Sterba’s Cory Catfish sold by Josh’s Frogs are sold as unsexed animals. Color/Pattern: Sterba’s Cory Catfish have the distinction of being one of the prettiest Corydoras catfish available in the trade. They have lots of spots and patterns and gain a bit of orange coloration in the pectorals when mature. Social Behavior: Corydoras sterbai are very social animals and should be housed ideally in schools of 6 or more. The minimum group should be 3. They can be mixed with other species of Corydoras as well.
