For this History Channel documentary series, producers collected and assimilated roughly three thousand hours of rare World War II archival footage, edited down to miniseries length and offered for the very first time in High Definition. The HD gives the images a visual clarity and lucidity never before experienced with this particular subject. The content itself is highly personalized - an oral history of the global conflict, filtered through the words, experiences and accounts of twelve key men, and used to convey the specific details of front lines life, as it actually looked and sounded. The set also features The Battle for Iwo Jima, a reexamination of the titular struggle, incorporating battle footage never before publicly seen or released; it cross-sections the battle, breaking it down phase by phase. Also included is WWII in HD: The Air War, a high definition look at the American 8th Air Force's struggle to counter and defeat Hitler's Luftwaffe, as filtered through the recollections of three veteran American fliers, and also 60 Minutes fixture Andy Rooney, then a correspondent for Stars & Stripes. This particular documentary also offers color footage of such aircraft as P-51 Mustangs, B-17 Flying Fortresses and P-47 Thunderbolts.
