The original shield that came with my pump was too small so I ordered a new size. It was easy to find and order on the website and it quickly arrived to my home.
Apparently I have huge nipples. The 36mm is much more comfortable for me than the standard size that came with my pump. Reseasonable price. Fast shipping.
Medela has some great products and I was happy to see they offered this size but sadly, it is still too large for me. I gave it a good rating because it does what it's supposed to do but just not my size.
While I still prefer the flexible shields I got almost 6 years ago I'm glad I paid extra and got this size. For me personally they work better than the size that comes standard. I wish when you bought the pump you either got more sizes or you had the option to pick a size when buying the pump. Or even a trade in option. It just seems like such a waste to only give one size and I bet most people need a different size.
I bought these after trying to troubleshoot why my nipples were in so much pain after each pump session. I knew the 24mm shields were too big, but had no idea this size even existed. They fit so much better and as a result my pumps became a lot less painful. The only reason for the four stars is that the actual tube connector part on some of these is a little tight. Not sure if it's because it's so short and therefore a little thicker, but I often had to really force them on and off of my connectors.
I bought the 21mm because a 24mm was too large to fit my nipple area, per the instructions for proper shield fitting. The smaller shields fit well and I produced milk better overall. However, the shield itself fitting into the other components are not very compatible the way a 24mm is inserted. You have to actually almost force the 21mm into the other component for it to stay so the overlapping plastic piece seals.
I used the 24mm for a while before I realized they were way too big for me according to the shield sizing guide. My whole areola was being sucked in. I downsized to these and held the 24mm to the 21mm and there is barely any difference, if any. the length of the tube is quite shorter though. My nipple get so red, swollen and irritated when I get done pumping. I feel like a really good pumping experience would leave my nipples looking how they do after my daughter nurses. I end up looking like nippled did the Kylie Jenner plumping challenge.
I followed the directions on Medela's size chart when ordering the 21 mm shields. The shields fit well at first and were comfortable for the first 5-10 minutes of pumping. However, my nipples swell as I pump (normal, just the blood vessels dilating from the suction), and quickly the new shields became too small. One nipple actually started bleeding because of the friction. This happened the first time I used the shields and I haven't tried them again. I think the idea of a custom fit shield is great, but the size chart needs to take nipple swelling into account.
I used the 21mm breastshield for the first time today. I was using the 24 but it was a little too big. The 21 was a lot shorter than the 24 and did not fit into the connector verry well. I pumped then it popped off and spilled all my milk. I was a work and nedless to say I did cry over spilled milk. I have had a difficult time with milk production so this was pretty devistating. I think it should fit into the conector better than that.
I would like to start off saying I love the Medela Pump In Style and manual pump. While I'm glad to have the option to size down (even though it's still too large) I do hope this attachment gets a redesign. They are far shorter than the other shields and my nipple gets sucked almost all the way to the end of it and causes lasting pain. Please start making them longer just like the others. I did too almost lose milk when I pulled at the nursing bra for removal and the flange detached from the bottle but I was lucky enough not to spill. At this point I woneed if I would have been better off buying the aftermarket flange
