I have had this machine a few months and have made 8 quilts. One a king size behemoth. This machine is amazing. I have two other brothers, one is 25 years old. I really wanted something with a longer neck so I could quilt easier. I am so happy with my purchase. I love my brother machines. Free motion quilting is a breeze on this machine.
I just finished a 100 in sq. Quilt with no problems. I love my machine and havr a brothers project runway for special stitches
I've owned a brother embroidery machine for years. When it came to buying a straight stitch quilting machine I turned to brother again. I'm so glad I did. This machine is a work horse. So easy to set up and get sewing right away. I love the pin feed. My only complaint is that it doesn't have a low bobbin thread warning but maybe that's a good thing. This machine is totally mechanical and really simple. It's what I wanted in a quilting machine. A perfect companion to my little brother se400 machine.
As a beginning quilter, I did a lot of research and compared this model to similar models that cost much more and couldn't come up with a reason to not buy this one over the others. Not wanting to review it without a fair number of hours on it, I waited until now, at which time I've completed approximately 7 quilts. Initially, It was supposed to replace a 30-40 yr old Kenmore 12 stitch machine used for piecing, but a short time later I bought a quilting frame and I now use this exclusively on the frame. I have no complaints about the machine and any sewing problems have been caused by me (leaving the foot up, not checking tension before sewing, typical beginner's mistakes.) I have seen complaints about the threader, but I just take my time with it and use tweezers to pull the bottom thread up like another reviewer suggested. I'm mechanically oriented so I like the manual thread tension; it's simple and does the job once you're familiar with it. It stitches very, very well and there have been no skips while quilting on the frame. Yes, for those interested, it does have small throat area for a quilting frame, but it's much larger than standard home sewing machines and much, much less expensive than one with a larger throat. All in all, I think is one of those purchases that are an excellent value for the money.spent.
I purchased the Brother PQ1500SL specifically for free motion quilting. I wanted a straight-stitch machine that was extremely sturdy and fast with a lot of space under the sewing arm so that I could use it to quilt large projects. It also had to be economical and free of all the extraneous "bells and whistles" that I don't need. After reading a lot of reviews, I settled on this one and I'm so glad I did! It's strong, easy to use and sews beautifully at every speed. The threading is a bit different from most of today's machines, but will be familiar to those of us who have sewn on older models, and the pictured threading instructions that come with it are very clear. I agree that inserting the bobbin might be difficult for right-handed users, but I'm left-handed so that's not a problem for me. I keep this machine set up for free motion quilting right next to my Brother NX650, which I use for piecing and everyday sewing, and between the two, I think I've got the best of both worlds.
After researching a number of machines, this one was the best choice. It will handle all my quilting needs. It is quiet, powerful and easy to use. It came completely ready to use right out of the box. It has made a difference in my sewing performance and I could not be happier.
I absolutely love my machine! It is so fast! I love how smooth it sews, I LOVE to free motion quilt on this machine! I just did a huge t shirt quilt with no problem! Plenty of throat space too, which makes it so easy to quilt large items! I have already recommended this machine to my quilting friends! I had the Brother C6000i and loved it! I learned to quilt on that one! I had it for 5 years. I recently gave it to my son in laws mom and it's still going strong!
I had been wanting to free motion quilt, but I had not had the best results on my other Brother machine. The throat was to small. So when my husband told me to try this one, (poor guy heard me talk about it for weeks, he's my rock) I tried it. I had a quilt sandwich all ready to go, I did a few sample pieces and they were great so in goes the full/queen size quilt. It was amazing. I got a little to fast from time to time, but I was amazed at the ease. I used a heavy thread on top and bobbin, so I had to change bobbin frequently, (the only real complaint, getting to the bobbin, but by the time I was done with the quilt, I was an old had at it.) LOL You can see on the close up picture I did some thread writing. I was soooo happy with the ease of that too. I have finished another quilt as you go quilt also (the blue). I have 2 other tops done ready to quilt too. I am on a quilting frenzy.
I've been amazed at how fast it sews. I enjoy the adjustable feed dog positions and the quality. The needle threader isn't the best and the metal screw inside the tension dial broke off of my for no reason. Other than that, it's a dream to quilt and see with.
I bought this machine for quilting. For that purpose, i works fine. The "automatic " threader is nearly impossible to get to work, too complicated. I own a Brother embroidery machine, also, and the threader works great, great design. Why this same d3sidn couldn't be implemented on my quilting machine is beyond my ken.
