I bought the Bathroom Fan two days ago and installed yesterday. I read the instructions the day that I bought the unit and then I read them again before I installed it. I also looked at the diagrams that were printed on the box and then I began to install. I actually found this pretty easy to install and to wire in to my existing two switch setup. This bathroom use to have a large tub in one corner so it had a large exhaust fan. I took out the tub and based on the square footage purchased this fan. The other fan made it like a wind tunnel because it was 110 cfm. The fan this morning worked as designed and came on when the humidity reached its level and ran for the twenty minutes. It was as quite as expected and much quiter than the old one. The light is very bright, and I think based on the area I am going to get a dimmer switch that is recommended through the Broan site. My last step now is to finish the ceiling repair today and when that is done you won't know the ceiling had beren changed.
It replaced a very old exhaust fan/heat lamps. Total replacement required attic access, changing mounting bracket's (bought separately), installing new tubing & roof vent (bought separately), resizing Sheetrock mounting hole. Already had two switches so I can control fan & light independently.
I'll admit, I'm better than 80 percent of the population at DIY, and 3 hours was more than I expected, but that was due to the original fan. Wired to single power outlet switch, so not sure how all the features will work, but it sucks and blows, in a good way, is quiet and lights up the room. Hoping humidity feature will still work by shutting off after room is below set point with power on. Packaging should state that full function is on achieved by multiple power switches.
Finally a Customer Support person that answers my exact question (about wiring), and explains all the functions. (Technical Support Team 800-637-1453) By the way, don't worry about only having 1 switch to the unit if you don't care about the light being operated or dimmed on a separate switch. Just wire Black to Black/Brown, and cap the Grey.
This is extremely quiet and the light is very bright. I have a panasonic version of this in my other bathroom. The panasonic is noisier & the light is not as bright & cost more. I highly recommend the broan bathroom version. I will definitely replacing my other fan with the Broan Nutone.
Had I known it was going to be such a production to install I would have simply changed the motor on the old one and left it at that. That being said, I had already removed the old unit and cut the drywall back so at that point I was commited. Broan... You've been making exhaust fans for about 100 years. It's a nice unit. however the instruction booklet is not specific to this unit. Also, there was no "parts bag" unless you count the package of black sheet metal screws. 1. The junction box for the power is on the opposite side from the old unit, which was also a Broan. That meant I had to install a junction box to extend the power cables to make it reach the new unit. 2. I was lucky enough to have two wall switches. I wired the new one so the light in the fan comes on when you turn the bathroom lights on. 3. The wiring explanation in the manual is vague and over complicated at best. Here is a logical explanation of what each of the wires are for: All of the WHITE wires connect to the WHITE wire coming from your house (neutral) The BLACK wire is for the LED light The BROWN wire tells the Humidistat to turn on when it senses humidity The GRAY wire tells the Humidistat NOT to turn on when it senses humidity The GREEN wires are ground. There is a GREEN wire on the LED connector that goes nowhere. Cut it off so you only have the BLACK and WHITE wires left. If you have only one switch that controls everything in your bathroom, wire the light and fan and humidistat directly to power (gray and brown wires along with the black wire to the (black) hot side of coming out of the wall switch and the fan and light will run when you turn it on at the switch. The fan and light will work but the humidistat won't because it will turn off when you turn the switch off. I connected the gray and brown wires to hot on the second switch the was used to control the old fan and light. I cut the gray wire and put a small inline rocker switch inside the housing. The fan now cycles automatically. If you cycle the wall switch (ON- OFF-ON) it will override the humidistat and run the fan until you put it back in AUTO mode (ON-OFF-ON) again. **If you're not comfortable working with house wiring have someone who is qualified do it for you** Overall the finshed installation turned out good. It just took a lot longer than I expected.
Spent 3 hours doing the installation and still couldn't figure out how to get the sensors working. Tech support don't work in weekend. All the responses to all the questions is contact tech support. It would make your tech support's lift much better to simply create a FAQ.
Purchase this unit with the hopes of an easy install only to find out I have to return it. It. The wiring diagram which is only visible after you open the Box in the Box and look at the manual States that in order for the functions to work you need to buy a separate switch which is not included. Even if the switch was included more than likely you'd have to rewire. Of course I didn't look at these reviews before I purchased it and now have learned my lesson
install rave on product box is inaccurate...install is difficult, takes hours even for experienced, and even with retrofit, and directions poorly written; better off with you tube video to show truth about install and how to install, as then consumers would know what project entails.advertised info on box is totally different from actual install simplicity, as nothing easy or simple about installing fan. extra switches are required to fully use all functions, yet this detailed and necessary part info is lacking until after purchase and reading fine print on install instructions, so cost is even more for this product. I feel this switch should be included with fan to make an already complicated project less so.
Installed the fan. I was very very disappointed. The wiring diagram does not show how to wire if your existing fan and fan light run on a separate circuits. Instructions stated you needed a "function control-Purchase separately" That needs to be on the front of the box or sell it included. Had to wire it by trial and error. Could not get the dam pin socket connectors to come apart,.so going back to rewire was a pain. Do not waste your money.
