I train in the Sierra mountains around Lake Tahoe, I usually run in New Balance, Nike, North Face or Solomon. These are the best trail running shoes I've had. They do everything very well, better than any other. I got the Orange, had such an awesome run I ordered another pair in black/lime for hiking. These would make great summer trail hikers too if you're not a runner.
The best fitting and wearing shoes that I've owned in a long time, so I purchased a second pair.
Incredible shoes from the lugs to the laces! These became my favorite trail runners - ever - within the first few miles. So far, I've worn these shoes in a wide variety of terrain (from sand dunes to Michigan forests to Arizona desert) and have been amazed at how versatile they are across the board. Everything I love about these shoes: - Comfortable, even over extended distances (longest run in them so far is 50k) - Incredible traction in all surfaces and conditions - Lightweight - they feel fast, which is always nice - Durable as heck. I'm hard on shoes, and my first pair is over 400mi, but they aren't blown out and still have miles left to go. - Awesome for climbing. - Not bad on the eyes - cool design What I don't love about these shoes: - Wish they had a rock plate, but even without, they perform well in rocky/desert terrain. The sole is tough enough that a rock plate really isn't a necessity - so I consider this a really minor issue.
With 68 miles so far on the Long Sky I'm quite pleased: no hot spots and excellent traction. The toe box is roomy but not overly so, though in my Men's 10.5 another couple of mm of toe length would be welcome. However, it's snug in the mid-foot thanks to the internal bootie so hitting the front of the toebox hasn't been a problem so far. Merrell, please don't lose the internal bootie; it's a feature I now look for in all my shoes. What I'd love to see is a version of the Long Sky with a bit more cushion for very long runs.
This product kept my feet and body happy after many miles on the John Muir Trail in the Eastern Sierras. The Vibram sole grip kept me from slipping on wet rocks. The medial support helped my running form stay solid and feet stay comfortable during the long day. The upper is light and breathable enough for warmer weather. This shoe rocks and I'm excited to put them through the ringer!
Great traction and love how light they feel. I've used them for trail running this spring and have had no issues.
Have been looking for a replacement for the discontinued Mountain Masochists for years... This shoe is so close! Love the traction for VT trails. Drop, flexibility and stability are perfect. Overall comfort is good. Only wish that forefoot/toebox was wider and heel, narrower.
Very much like this shoe - tough/rugged and comfortable. Two items caused me move to a different Merrell shoe: my big toe created a small hole, and I felt the Merrell on the outside was too bright (like an ad).
Pros: Color, looks awesome, love these colorways Merrell is doing the Train Runners in. Cushion: You can feel the squish just a bit but also notice the support post in the heel for pronation providing support. Airflow: The Mesh upper provides adequate airflow Drainage: Why not as good as the Skyfire, the TPU overlays hold water in, it is still better than most in the class of shoe. Fit: I normally wear a 10 and I think this shoe is true to size. Grip: The sole is great and has plenty of grip on a variety of surfaces. Cons: Lacing: Its really hard to get a snug fit wiithout race tieing the laces and putting a lot of pressure (uncomfortable) on the top of your foot. Heel: It slips too much. Even with the laces cranked down the heel slips. Upper: Bunches in an uncomfortable manner right at the flex point of your toes/foot. Overall I'd give this shoe a TRY. But if you get the heel slip, there is really no cure for it. So its easy to tell if these are gonna work or not. Once v2 of this shoe comes out, I'll be in line to try it out.
First time using trail runners. Comfortable shoe, but did not wear well. Used mainly for hiking, walking, and some trail running. Loved them initially, but did not hold up with less than a year's use. Supposedly abrasion-resistant mesh was shredded on both sides of shoe. Inside behind heel disintegrated. Soles didn't wear evenly, but not sure if that's me or the shoe. One peculiar thing about them is that the supplied laces will not stay tied. Must be double-knotted or they rapidly come undone.
