It has a something about it that worked - sadly it never finished, but the link between history and the story are close enough to be reasonably accurate. Most loved it, but a few thought the language was rough . . . try it and rest assured it is worth the money.
This series is unapolligetically raw and somewhat over the top, however this kind of writing is tense and entertaining. some of the lines spoken are downright profane but makes it funny too. very enjoyable to watch but not for the squeemish or faint of heart. it's a definite mule kick to the face kind of series.
This box set is great. The language is pretty rough, so if you offend easily you may want to pass. But if you dont mind alot of cussing its a great western with lots of bonus features, in a neat box set.
We have wanted this set for a long time and didn't want to pay the money they were charging other places. When I saw this set had to get it for my husband's Christmas present. We have not watched video yet as we had seen it on HBO. We are waiting for a snowy weekend. The price couldn't have been better and was delivered to the house before I expected it. The Deadwood series is not for everyone but if you like it you will be pleased with the price. Walmart on line made my Christmas shopping a breeze this year.
This was really put together nicely! It's in a nice case with great pictures from real life back then, and some of the show. Yes there is a lot of swearing and killing, but I heard from biographies that it was worse than what they portray on the show. It is made for adults, so if you don't dwell on what might shock you, then you can get to know the characters and the story. It may be hard to get them all at first, but it gets better and better with each show. It makes us want to watch it all over again when we are done with it, now that we are getting to know the characters so well, because we might pick up on even more from the beginning. It is such a great show that it makes my husband and I want to go to South Dakota to soak up all the history, now that we have a little taste of it. And what makes it all so easy to buy is the great price, you won't find it cheaper anywhere else, cause I have looked. You won't regret it, it is an amazing show.
I agree with the other reviewers, not for all audiences. But for those who love gritty westerns this is the holy grail. I have mentioned this series a number of times to my new husband, but he thought that i was exaggerating about how brilliantly this was written and acted....But boy, after me getting him to watch the very first episode, he was hooked! We love it!.........Swearingen is a monster, what a performance!
I really enjoyed this so if you like westerns and history this is the one to buy.
Well, where do I start as there are so many tastes of people, huh? I am age 55 with a hubby and children ages 18 down to 12; so we watch a various array of movies and tv shows from G to R ratings; so I am not a prude, but love tasteful shows alike. I must say ALL your morals and values just might change after watching just two episodes of this series.....trust me; but, you will be hooked! The acting is fantastically casted with such well rounded and marvelouos actors from Ian McShane to Timothy Olyphant to names you might have forgotten, but once you see their faces you will realize their expertise and excellent acting have been around for years. There are scenes that make you cover your eyes; but, yet want to peek through your fingers and some harsh and very crude language that will curl up your toes, tee hee :-). But, I just can't believe the wonderful writing and fun with drama this show offers. Ian and Timothy are well worth the watch! Not recommended for young children if you feel you haven't taught them ANY facts of life yet...even though I don't recommend any of the lifestyles in this series to live in real life; it's just a hoot with such comedy and drama story line. REMEMBER, buckle yourself to your couch/chair for shocking language and scenes; even though it does mellow with each season. Enjoy with no blinders on :-).
I never watched the Deadwood series on H B O. A friend told me about the series. I bought the complete set and have been watching it at my job during my lunch break. The language is a little rough, but the show is very good. I like the authenticity of the western history of Deadwood.
Since this is a product review, I'm not going to review the series itself. I will say that since I am an adult and haven't been sheltered, the explicit language and coarse subject matter doesn't bother me. I found the entire series to be dramatic, very entertaining, interesting and highly recommend it to anyone interested in the time period. The packaging of the DVDs is very artistic. They are sleeved in a box like the pages of a book, with glossy pictures of some of the actors and the real people they represent, with quotations and facts both from real life and from the series. My single complaint is that the video quality of season 2 appears overly dark, shadowed and distracting.
