This one-of-a-kind collection features the dozen Holmes movies digitally restored and remastered by the UCLA Film and Television Archive. South African-born British actor Basil Rathbone was a star of such classics as The Adventures of Robin Hood, David Copperfield and Romeo and Juliet before achieving screen immortality playing Arthur Conan Doyle's brilliant Holmes, beginning with The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes in 1939. Those instant hits led to 12 more mind-bending mysteries over the next seven years, each also starring Nigel Bruce (Alfred Hitchcock's Suspicion) as Holmes' loyal, if often befuddled, friend Dr. Watson. While several of the Rathbone movies were based on Conan Doyle's original stories, others pitted Holmes against contemporary villains, including the Nazis. But Rathbone's personification of literature's most famous crime solver remained a constant source of wonder and delight throughout the series.

Best collection of Sherlocke Holmes movies. They are good quality picture for a classic. Sound is okay, but that could be fault of our system has nothing to do with movie quality in my opinion. These classic movies are fun to watch and Basil Rathbone is wonderful in the role of Sherlocke Holmes, one of my favorites. I believe there are 14 movies in this collection but not positive without looking back. Worth buying and adding to your collection.

Basil Rasthbone as Sherlock Holmes is a marvel. The series dating from the 1940's was almost lost. The movies were literally pieced back together through one of the most difficult restoration project that lasted several years. The result is amazing and the picture quality much better than many movies made in the 70's and transferred recently into DVD. The series include some acclaimed titles such as The Scarlet Claw and Dressed to Kill. A must have!

Usually the Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce versions of Sherlock Holmes on DVD that have been available are the same few; Dressed to Kill, Terror by Night etc. I have seen others on TV, and have recorded some of them. But, this set has some movies I have never seen. I particularly like Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes, though I understand the appeal of some of the others. But, in my mind, he was the best. I like the Universal genre. Now, I finally have all of them.

We are big fans of Rathbone and Bruce. To find all of their Holmes movies and at a great price, well can't wait to watch them! Why shop anywhere else when Walmart has everything and everything cheaper?

Glad that I purchased this 'old school' Sherlock Holmes as a gift ...... while it may be campy it's sure a lot of fun to watch on a cold winter's day!
