Amazing performance in a small package

I purchased the configuration with 1080p display, 16GB of Ram and 1TB HDD Got to play with it these last couple days and let me say I'm very impressed. It is very quiet even at full load where you just hear a whisper from the fans. So far I was able to run all the games I have on ultra settings at 1080p (most are 2013 games such as Grid 2). It scored 3300 on 3D Mark Firestrike so that's very reasonable. This system is a great complement to my Alienware Aurora R4 desktop PC. I was not 100% sold on the AW13 when it was announced but now I found it to have the perfect blend of portability and power. I ordered a 500GB SSD to replace the current HDD.

Premium performance and feel

This is my first alienware product ever and I'll never choose another brand for my gaming needs and satisfaction. I was on the fence about what to get until I heard about this laptop and after seeing it, I waited 4 months for the release to buy it. I never knew laptops could feel so premium, solid, and smooth. When I pick up the A-13 I know this is a quality piece of technology worth every penny, and a step up from my last laptop which was made of a cheap plastic shell, and yes it did crack without much doing on my part. The laptop is so sexy, it literally has curves and angles which is something new to me and I love it, the fx lighting adds the finishing touch, like the cherry on top. I got the base model with the 860m and 720p screen, I was a little concerned with the performance of the 860m but to my surprise it took every game I threw at it with ease at ultra settings, LITERALLY everything at ultra including, tomb raider, metro last light, Re 6 and more, I can only imagine how it will perform once I purchase the graphics amplifier. It felt good knowing I didn't have to comprise beauty for brains, its equal inside out. I digress but I really appreciate that alienware offers 720p screens on their laptops, it's easy on the graphics cards and you can achieve more fps's and turn the eye candy all the way up and everything still looks amazing, viewing angles are limited but that's about it, It will always be my preferred choice of screen. And to wrap up this review, the most amazing thing about this laptop is how quiet it is! I can honestly say I have never, never, ever had a laptop this quiet. I'm still impressed, I was concerned it didn't have fans because I could never hear them, silly I know but true. The only time you might be able to hear them, and I doubt you will because you will be focused on gaming and the volume will be up, is when you get into your gaming, I actually had to mute the speakers to try to hear the fans. And it stays cool, warm but never hot, not even close. I thank Alienware for making such a great piece of technology both inside and out, I'm in love with my A-13, Cant wait to get the graphic amplifier and gtx 970 and create my ultimate gaming desktop rig, it's like a transformer but in laptop form, I love! Good day.

I recently received my order, and was very happy to have been able to order it with Windows 7 Pro. Main reason why I purchased it was because of its small size. My other computer is a 17 inch gaming laptop and it isn't exactly convenient to carry that around. My impressions so far is that the alienware 13 is well built and should last a few years. I really like the anti glare screen. I had an alienware m14x r2 a while ago and it had a glossy screen that was unbearable. Why anyone would want a glossy screen is beyond me but an option for a glossy screen is offered. To conclude I think this little laptop is bad*ss :) I definitely recommend it to anyone needing something portable. If you don't need portable then save your money and get the alienware 17.

After looking around for a small laptop I decided this was easily the most powerful on the market for the size I wanted. Opening the box I was a little surprised and happy to see it was a little smaller than expected. After installing a few games I was blown away at the performance. It was well beyond what I could have expected. Full1080p on a 13" screen looks great and the sound quality is there to match it as well. The materials used look and feel great. The shape and lines look amazing. Very thin and lightweight. The fans are pretty quiet and pretty much go unnoticed yet keep it fairly cool. All in all, this is a very well thought out design and just works. Couldn't be happier with my decision. Do yourself a favor and go with the solid state drives and the full 1080p display, you will not regret it. Alienware has built a terrific laptop here and has earned a repeat customer. Keep up the good work.

An amazing little beast

As the owner of two other generations of Alienware laptops, I am amazed by this generation. The Alienware 13 gaming laptop is very thin and powerful. Another huge plus is that it runs much quieter and cooler than my other laptops. Obviously, this is due to the newer silicon technology that is available. If you are looking for a small gaming laptop, this should be the one.

Great laptop

This laptop is great on many fronts. It is small and portable, the keys are smooth and the power is just right. It's a little heavy and the Windows 8.1 is sometimes a pain, but overall you will enjoy this machine. Made for gaming, great for productivity. I use this as my main pc for work. The issue I have with this machine is the charger/adapter. Geez the thing is bulky and heavy. As I need the laptop to go for more than 5-6 hours, I need to have the charger handy; it is a pain to carry around. Defeats the whole small and portable feature of this laptop. This is where the MacBook Pro has an edge. Something the designer and engineers need to rethink. Overall great laptop and I would recommend.

THE BEST: STATISTICAL COMPUTING

Reviewed in the USA on 2015-04-17T17:00:00

I bought the Alienware 13 because I was looking for a computer that could converge a matrix of 800,000 observations. This computer is able to do this in less than 1 hour. Other companies that sell to statisticians price their products above $5,000 for what Alienware prices their Alienware 13. I knew this was a long shot when purchasing and this product delivered the power necessary to run Mathematical and Statistical simulations as well as analysis. For graduate students that are on a budget and need a laptop for mathematical and statistical computing. This product will do the job.

Alienware 13 and Alienware Graphics Amplifier
(4)
Reviewed in the USA on 2015-04-10T17:00:00

The Alienware 13 is about compromise and options. I wanted a laptop that I could travel with, game with, and then some amount of future proofing, at least through the 3 year warranty period I purchased. The machine is not the fastest with only the dual core i7, but with that lesser power, you get almost NO fan noise, a light machine, that maintains stable temperatures even through gaming. The nvidia 960m let's me play the games I want at max and most "modern" 2015 release at decent settings. If you want something that will allow you to travel, game, not break your back lugging around, this is the machine. I looked at Razer, but their 14" offering was always subject to thermal issues and was too much of a risk. The Alienware Graphics Amplifier is an interesting option. I would recommend it for anyone who also plans on using a desktop-like setup with their 13. It allows a full PCI graphics card to take over the heavy lifting for GPU processing. I am running a PNY Nvidia 960 GTX which was a cheap middle of the road option. Some people are running TItan X, but if you have that card, buy a desktop. It is a great compromise for me to get even more graphic performance with little drawback. The PCI lane for the AGA is limited to 4x, but I am not at the extreme end that requires every ounce of power. The other drawback is the FAN. It sounded like a 747 on take off. While it can be replaced, it requires a very specific connector, not common on fans. See the Alienware Arena FAQ for details. Once I resolved the noise issue, the AGA is a great solution for me. In summary, great system that compromises in the right places to meet my needs. As always, coupons, Dell Advantage Membership, and the internet are your best friends for getting a great price.

Highly recommended, but still not perfect

I've had mind for about a month now and here's my thoughts. I opted for the core i5, and upgraded to the touch screen, 8gb ram. The GTX860m is adequate for gaming on the go but you will soon be wanting the Graphics Amplifier for home use. Also, opt for the core i7. You are going to want the extra processing power, especially if you buy the Graphics Amplifier. I put a GTX 970 in mine and it really bumps up the detail and FPS for gaming. However, with the core i5 in my AW13, there is bottle-necking when running the GTX970 through the GA. That is why I recommend the core i7, to get the most out of the desktop card by reducing the bottle-neck. Even still I am very happy with my purchase. I use my Alienware 13 for office work, 3D modeling, and gaming. While I wish I had opted for the core i7, or the AW15, overall I give this 4 out of 5 stars. This is my third Alienware laptop and I love each one more than the last. While it's not perfect, (what is?) it's still great and AW is definitely heading in the right direction.

The monitor and keyboard have some problems

I received it 10 days ago. The QHD monitor has some white spot on it. The light of the keyboard cannot be turned into green, but the light works for blue color. I hope you can come and fix my problem, or just give me a new one.
