Big performance in a little package

Fortuitously, I got to use this machine while on vacation this summer and was so impressed by it that I decided it was worth the downsizing when my 10 year old, full-sized front loader gave up the ghost in November. I had to either go with a compact front loader or a full-sized top loader, due to the growth in dimensions of the full-sized front loaders. I wanted to maintain the gentle cleaning and efficient use of water, energy, and laundry products I was used to with front loaders. The compact GE accommodates a decent sized load, about on par with a traditional top loader with an agitator. I show a pic with 3 sweat pants, 3 sweat shirts, 2 heavy T-shirts, 2 pairs of socks, and 3 knit caps that was loaded per instructions of filling the drum loosely. So far I have observed superb cleaning and rinsing, a huge improvement over the 10 year old machine. Some cycles employ higher water levels during certain phases of a cycle, with the water level reaching a few inches up the door glass. I had never seen this before in my previous front loaders and was startled to see the water line. See picture for an example of a rinse on the Active Wear cycle with water visible on the door. Heavy Duty similarly uses higher rinse levels. I have not had any issues with cleaning or rinsing in the cycles using lower water levels. The direct drive system (as opposed to belt drive) makes for quiet operation and more controlled drum motions. It has an aggressive and persistent load balancing algorithm that prevents unbalanced loads from spinning. It does not give up trying to spin between wash and rinse portions of the cycle like my old one. It is able to ramp up progressively to purge water before moving to higher speeds. I also noticed the interim spins are faster than my old machine. The max spin setting, which reaches 1,400 rpm near the end, leaves clothing well wrung out and shortens drying time. If it is unable to balance a load in the final spin, the SPIN light stays on and blinks after the cycle to alert you. I also saw a reduction in spin speed on one load it had trouble balancing to prevent damage to the machine and to reduce floor vibrations. Hopefully the reduction in spin vibrations will translate to longer life of the machine. Make sure it is level with the legs as close to the body and the lock nuts tightened to minimize vibration. Mine was not installed correctly, and I had to call GE for assistance in identifying the cause of a cabinet rattle. They suggested ensuring the machine was level. It was not, so I leveled it. In doing so, I introduced a vibration. I then turned the legs all the way down to the body and made sure it was level. It worked perfectly afterward. I can't comment on how it would fare on a suspended floor, but on a cement floor it is fine. Kudos to the wonderful GE customer service representatives who were courteous, friendly, and knowledgeable. Maintenance tasks are fairly simple. The gasket and door are easy to wipe in less than a minute at the end of wash day (important to prevent mold growth and leaks between the door and gasket). The dispenser drawer comes out completely, and the removable covers allow access to clean residues from the various compartments. The manual suggests to do this bimonthly, but I find it easier to do at the end of wash day before residues become dried on. The tub cleaning cycle has very aggressive action. You simply put the cleaning agent in the drum and press START; the machine does the rest. The pump filter compartment has a hose to empty the residual water into something shallow like a pie tin. It retains a surprising amount of water, so be prepared. My previous front loaders did not have an accessible filter. This is a welcome feature to easily remove items that fall into the outer drum and migrate toward the pump. Tub and filter cleaning are suggested monthly. If you cannot accommodate a full sized front loader, this machine would be a good option if you can stomach the high price tag and live with smaller loads and cycles of about an hour for an 'everyday' load. You will get the performance of a full-sized model and the benefits of low operating costs, gentle, effective cleaning, and excellent water extraction.

Although a smaller washer, I feel it has tremendous capacity. I also love, love, love, the simplicity of where to pour detergents, bleaches, softeners, etc. My clothes have never been cleaner!

Perfect for my tiny home

I needed a small washer to fit into a specific space in my tiny home and this one is perfect. It holds more laundry than I thought it would. It runs quietly and efficiently. It also looks nice in the space - so much better than the unitized type of washer and dryer set. It has all of the same features as the larger-sized version.

I had to downsize due to space limitations, and washers of this size are quite limited. Aside from the lessened load, I haven't had a problem with the washer. It does well, is quiet, and effectively cleans out the clothes without leaving soap residues. It's a solid product.

We already purchased the matching dryer, so when our old washer died, we made this purchase. We have a small laundry room, but this worked perfect for us. The washer has performed great so far and is much more quiet than our old washer. I'd purchase this unit again.

If you need a washer&dryer & have limited space, this is it !. Matche it Wirth its companion dryer. It does a fantastic job in normal wash time (not like the all in one units do). Easy to use remembers the program you set, has all the features you can need. It's quite & very stable, great for single or two person household, made to fit under countertop,no remodeling needed, just attach water lines ,plug it in and Wash.

I chose to buy this product after reading many reviews of smaller W/D combos with ventless dryer. I love it. Sits in kitchen in my apartment, the slim design is a space saver. I was a bit concerned about load capacity but it accommodates all my laundry loads including beach towels or my King sized sheets and thin blanket just fine. It has many cycles to chose from and while I have not used all of them yet, I can't imagine a laundry need not covered by one of the options. I have frequently used the quick cycle option for lightly soiled loads and only takes 26 minutes. Soon cycle is great for loads with towels and other materials that can get water logged, which is very important as the stacked dryer is ventless. I love the ventless dryer too and created a separate review for that. Unit washes great, looks great, is VERY quiet. In fact, I sometimes jump when it plays its little tune indicating the cycle is done, as I forgot it was running. Unit is very quiet and has a pleasant reminder tune when cycle finishes. My electric bill has not increased noticeably so unit is appropriately energy efficient. The unit's excess lint trap at the bottom is easy enough to empty/clean out periodically, but it is tough to get a container in the right position to catch the water that comes out, so my floor gets wet. Maybe I am not doing it right as I have only done it 2x. I also love the way the W/D stacks for additional space saving. They are very sleek and modern looking. Lastly for those also living in very humid environments by the ocean, making rust a problem, I have had zero rust so far. Unit has been in place for 6 months and so far so good. Conversely, I am continually addressing new indications of rust on my stove and refrigerator which have been in place a similar timeframe. I love this product.

Measure before you buy!!

The washing machine is an apartment-sized one. It is easy to use and does a good job cleaning my clothes. It has a number of different cycles, which I appreciate. The downside to this machine is it does not fit into the closet where I have my washer and dryer. The Whirlpool I had before fit perfectly — this one does not. It sticks out because the washer door is not flush with the machine and I think that is a poor design. I measured the space before purchasing, thinking it would fit, but the measurements apparently did not include the jutting out door. I will now have to hire a carpenter to try and adjust my door so that it will close around the machine. So, if you do buy this machine, double measure a hundred different ways to make sure it will fit your space.

Not durable

Washer works well but don't buy it for longevity. I have had two of these in just under ten years. Both broke, same issue, the basket. Non repairable unless you want to pay more than you would for a new one. The second one also had a door issue that I had to pay for, locking mechanism broke. You might wonder why I bought a second one, because the dryer was (and still is) working fine and I have space constraints so am limited in the machines I can buy. However, I will never buy a GE again.

VERY DIFFICULT DRYER WITH THIS WASHING MACHINE!

Reviewed in the USA on 2023-11-26T16:00:00

This washing machine is just ok. And the twin dryer that goes on top of this washing machine is frankly terrible. It « BALLS » all the clothes up. I Will send pictures. If I put one sheet or a towel or anything else to dry, after going around for about 5 minutes or so, it envelops all the clothes into a giant ball and keeps turning. I have to open the dryer and « unwrap » that ball in order to get the other items out of the enclosed ball. Then I have to «  hang dry » all the items except for one !!!!!!! Frankly it's just ridiculous. I need to change it. Nothing dries like this. Can you please help me????
