WOW. To put it bluntly this knife is huge, beautiful, well balanced, and sharp. I can't stop playing with it. The balance is perfect for a knife like this: it balances about 3/4" forward of the guard which gives enough blade presence to cut/slash while still allowing a good amount of control in the hand. It is perfectly ground and exceeds my expectations for Cold Steel products. You may have read on the internet that some of the first batch of these SK-5 carbon steel blades had guards that were loose... these are not from the first batch and the handles and guards are as tight as they can be. I also read that the handle would be black/silver laminate with brass fittings that I personally thought would look horrible; I was pleasantly surprised to find a brown/dark brown/light brown laminate handle that looks perfect with the brass fittings. The sheath is Kydex... I would have preferred leather but you can easily make a leather sheath should you desire. Having said that the Kydex is done WELL. The guard locks in tightly enough to hold the knife without the use of the keeper... although I wouldn't recommend it, it is kinda cool. The Kydex is molded so the blade does not touch the inside of the sheath so it will not dull or mar the blade. Just a side note, my blade is stamped O1 instead of SK-5, which is more than fine with me because I love O1 steel, the same steel that Randall Knives uses if you are familiar, they make $500+ custom knives. It has excellent blade geometry with a flat grind that terminates with a slightly more angled edge called an apple seed grind for strength. It has cut everything I have fed it with ease... light targets mind you, this is a FIGHTING KNIFE, not a camp knife. It is not made to cut down trees, it is balanced and ground to kill whatever may be bothering you quickly. The "false edge" a.k.a. top edge, is also well sharpened although I took a stone to mine and made it razor sharp. In conclusion this is a very well made knife at a price point that most of us can afford... forget the overpriced San-Mai III version, this is the way to go, I LOVE this knife!!!
