After reading the problems a few of the other reviewers had, I suggest reading the instructions; they may get thrown out with the box. I have had excellent results; it really works IF the springs are correctly attached and all attached in the same way. There are FOUR holes to use; your choice. Oh, and a tray would allow squirrels to defeat the mechanism. I do think the manufacturer should make the instructions a full size sheet of paper and much clearer. My three feeders save me money in seed and are well worth their cost. They hang outside a large window under an overhang, and my computer is right at the window. I use either Morning Song regular or the Gourmet; lots of birds, even white breasted nuthatches that feed upside down! Wonderful and practical feeders. If squirrels keep bothering the feeder, shake some cayenne red pepper on the TOP of the feeder; they won't be back. It takes a couple weeks for the birds to find and get used to the feeder.
It is a little difficult to fill....the seed spews out of the holes....but lifting the squirrel cage covers the holes and prevents the seed from going out the holes...it is just a little awkward ... [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
Keeps pesky squirrels from getting the seeds this is the third one I have purchased I still have one and the other one busted when a squirrel twisted it and it fell off it's top and broke when it hit the ground so I make sure that when I put the top back on I make sure it's tight
First, like so many before me have said, this feeder is NOT squirrel proof. There is too much plastic exposed when the feeder is in "bird" mode (as squirrels hang from the top)...or if a squirrel triggers "squirrel" mode (by hanging on the bottom portion of the metal "cage" around the seed bin). The squirrels have a field day with the plastic. But, having said all of that I also want to say that if you have a situation where you can mount this feeder on a pole with a squirrel baffle under the feeder and in a place where the squirrels can't jump onto the feeder from a tree or structure, the birds love, love, love this feeder. It holds a LOT of seed and the feeding stations work well for all size birds. This is my second one of these and I am working on modifying it to make it MUCH more squirrel resistant. I like that the lid/roof screws on and that it overhangs the feeder as much as it does. It's obvious that the birds like being able to get out of the rain or snow for a treat. It's a little bit of a pain to fill this feeder because the baffles between the three chambers sit very high and have a tendency to bounce seed away from the feeder if you pour seed in too quickly (I use black-oil sunflower seed). Overall quality is good and I think it is a good value. Delivery was pretty fast. The feeder was packaged carefully and arrived in perfect shape. I would recommend this feeder!
I really like this feeder, especially the three separate compartments which can be filled with different types of wild bird seed. I had a similar feeder for years, with one single seed bin. Since I got this one, we have a lot more birds to watch. I'm not too sure about the "Squirrel Be Gone" name, though. If a squirrel puts weight on a perch, the feeding holes are closed off (covered). HOWEVER, we have a determined squirrel who just hangs from the bottom and gets sunflower seeds out of it that way. He's as entertaining as the birds are.
Nice feeder with several portals, which birds keep occupied. However, even though portals close with squirrel's weight, they quickly figured they could sit at the closed portal and reach around to another open one and have a feast. Price is somewhat high.
I liked the fact that it held a large amount of bird food so that I didn't have to fill it so often. What I didn't like was the fact that the "squirrel-be-gone" part didn't discourage the squirrel! He found a way to defeat the feeder by hanging from the top in a way that he was able to take his sweet time eating as much as he wanted! Each time he was able to get to the feeder, unbeknownst to me, he kept loosening the top. The feeder detached from the top and fell to the ground and was damaged. Can no longer use it. Feeder top needs to have a more secure system for locking it in place, not just by screwing it closed.
This is not well made at all. Poor design.. Not squirrel proof or tested. Squirrels will get on top and spin it around as they go all around it. This will unwind the top which causes the rest of the feeder to fall to the ground. Put a wire thru the top to secure it but the entire plastic barrel cracked apart. Total waste of money.
Attractive, however the squirrels constantly close the seed openings p, requiring me to get out ladder from shed, so I can reach the feeder.
This is not squirrel proof by any means. Spring mechanism does not cause the outer cage to drop and cover the ports on one of my feeders and the squirrels have eaten the plastic holes to get to the seed. They have practically destroyed my brand new feeders in less than a week. I'd return these but doubt Walmart would take them back.
