This is a great first microscope(Model 44320). I received it as a gift so I really don't know its value but it does everything, and is very easy to use. The software loaded easily with Windows XP and also it is easy to use. The photo taken was a small gemstone illuminated from the bottom so you are looking inside a stone. Not bad for a first timer.
it is just perfect for kids in elementary and middle school.. kept them busy for hours..highly recommend this
Great product for the money! My 7 year old asked for a microscope and he got this one for his birthday. He loves it!
I bought this for my 11 yr old as a birthday present as Celestron is known for producing quality optics. He likes seeing different things magnified, and the product functions adequately for this purpose. It is made of plasic, however, so he knows he needs to handle it with care. Have not hooked it up to the computer yet. Will send an update when we do. Rated 4 stars for lighting not as bright as I would like, though adequate, and product made of plastic.
I got this microscope for my son after trying one at another toy store that was more expensive. It works great. The vision is very clear, a piece of the handle popped off but was easily put back on. I recommend this if you are looking for a reasonably priced microscope.
I work with jewelry-making and gems, and found the binocular microscopes offered to identify gems very expensive, so I purchased this one with digital camera capeability to examine and view the gems on my computer screen. It is facinating to say the least, to be able to look inside a gemstone and see the inclusions or other little items not visable to the naked eye. This product does this excellently, giving me better than binocular viewing out of a biological microscope! I love using it and viewing a whole new world inside the gems. It is like viewing outer space! It was very easy, even for a computer illiterate fool like myself to load the software and operate the microscope via the computer! I just love the picture-taking capeability also. I have gotten some wondrous pics! The only problem I had was that the pen-light quit working the second day, and it was not the batteries. I could not get the bulb out of the penlight to replace it, so I have just used my Ott jewelry light for illumination from above, and it works quite well. All other parts of the microscope work great, and I am fascinated with using it with the computer. I am very happy with it, I just would like a new pen-light!
Would (probably) be 5 bars if not for problem camera. The camera did not fit the screw-on connection on the microscope thereby making it unusable. I will return it for refund due to this problem. Hope the Manufacturer fixes this problem. If I had to guess, mine wasn't the ONLY one and the problem exists for numerous units which have been distributed to retailers. I would buy it AGAIN if they take care of the problem. Feel free to have them contact me if and when they do. I see that the next question (below this window) asks if I "would recommend this product to a friend. ANSWER is "yes" (if they fix it)
I'll admit, this product met my expectations. At ~$50, you won't get much in the realm of quality when it comes to microscopes. The problem with it is, most people who buy these are taking their first foray into micro viewing, or it's purchased by parents as gift for their children. You want that first experience to be enjoyable and enriching, but this thing is just plain frustrating to use. Due to the plastic gearing and lack of fine control, bringing things into focus is problematic. You couple that with the sloppy optics (The lenses simply aren't built well enough to make a legible image at the higher powers.), and it becomes difficult or impossible to get any good views of small objects, pond water, etc. The microscope boasts an impressive 600x power, but the poor specifications on its lenses make actually viewing anything at that power impossible. I was really only able to use it up to about 200X power. I thought perhaps the digital camera might be useful to make viewing a bit easier, but it was practically garbage. there was some kind of film over the camera that would shrink to halfway across the view screen, making one half of the image too dark and the other half too bright; plus the camera doesn't come with support for the latest version of windows. Conclusion: It's not worth having, really. You can forget about ever using the higher powered lenses, and even at 100-200x, you'll find yourself squinting at grainy, not quite focused images, and simply won't enjoy yourself. The digital camera sounds nice in theory, but the camera itself is a mess, and if you're running windows 7, you may have a hard time getting it set up, depending on your computer savvy. It can do what it says it can, but does it so poorly, there's no reason to use it. Recomendation: wait until you can get some kind of package for $100+
Bought this unit for my Grandson and its been a very big disapointment. External light (glorified flashlight) does not work well, plastic housing is loose and eye piece is very fragil. Comes with a USB camera to replace eyepiece and it sounds good in theroy, the actual fact is that the software does not work and the company that supplies it does not have an update to the software so I had to go to a 3rd source for that. Save your money and buy a better unit.
i bought this microscope for my 10 yr old for xmas... she had been wanting one for quite some time. when we put the batteries in the light wouldn't work because the there was a gap between the battery and the door, so we had to use aluminum foil to fill in the gap. then when we tried to camera... we discovered that there was a crack on the lens. needless to say... we returned the thing after 1 ATTEMPTED use.
