excellent for student
It was meant to be a back-up for the older but reliable and easy to use HP 41CX....yes after 20+ years it's still working...and well, but spilt some liquid on it the other day...so I needed a back-up plan. Wish the owners manual was printed (but I can see that 880 pages is allot). While it's packed with features and powerful functions....sure would like it to have the simple "store 01" quick value save instead of odd sequence of key strokes to save....as numbers are stored often on the fly. Haven't gone past the first two chapters in the manual....so not all sure what it can do.
Just buy this calculator. Unless you like to complicate your life, learn to use the RPN mode of entry - no engineer should be using anything else. RPN takes about 10 minutes to learn, but it will save you countless hours and greatly reduce entry errors.
Hello, thus, that are struggling in using this calculator due to the poor documentation provided by HP might consider using the 'HELP for *all* commands integrated into the O.S.' that I have coded. This software is a complete context sensitive help system containing detailed help entries for 764 user commands including stack diagrams and "hyperlinked" navigation to related commands. The help system is very flexible and very fast and allows adding any additional help desired. Details are available on my website. Regards, Andreas
After 15 years, I lost my HP 48. I was quite apprehensive about getting a new calculator. I use a calculator for more than balancing a checkbook so, of course, TI was out. After looking at the reviews/ recommendations there really was only one choice for a real scientific calculator - the 50G. The 50G is quite a bit faster than the 48 for the features that I use, and it has an updated serial port to connect to USB. The manual contained enough to get me started. Though the "User Guide" is freely available as a pdf, it would have been nice if they provided the it in hard-copy like they did with the 48. Where some buttons moved and some menus changed, the 50G is a solid replacement to the 48. All is right with the world again.
I just wanted to provide some positive feedback on the 50g. This is one great calculator. Very powerful, tons of memory, love the RPN. Great upgrade from the 48G, which I have used for over 10 years as a chemical engineer. The enter button on the corner is not an issue to me that others have made it out to be. Bought in on-line, and Walmart's delivery was early, arrived in great shape, and everything works great. Can not beat the price. Battery life is surprisingly good compared with what I've read on other forums. Thanks HP and Walmart !
I've used HP calculators since the early 70's. I learned how to use an HP 45. This one is for one of my sons who is taking a calculus course. It more than meets the needs of the class and should serve him well for years to come. As has been said by many, TI calculators are great for students, HP's are for engineers.
I have to say I grew up with the old HP41CV and have been disapointed with a few of the HP calculators since. However, this HP 50G is very easy to use and is far faster and more "usable" than the TI-nSpire I was using. Great calculator I would recommend to anybody needing this kind of power in a calculator.
Have been an HP user since the original HP-35; which I considered a miracle. My HP-48SX died several years ago and was sorely missed. This 50g is one sweet machine. I'm retired so can devote the hours studying it. The 48SX manuals come in handy filling in info which seems to be missing in the 50g manuals. What nice documentation that was! Many minor errors in the PDF documents for this new machine, but the flood of new features is wonderful. How far they have come since the HP-35.
The HP 50G is a very fine calculator, but the manual is atrocious. I had to get online to find how to store and recall memory values and still don't like the way that feature works. I was spoiled with the well designed and extremely user-friendly HP41 line of calculators, so moving to the 50G is painful at best. The calculator certainly has a lot of features and of course the RPN is great, but the poor documentation on how to work the thing, coupled with the fact that some common features are just plain inconvenient (e.g. sto/rcl) really causes me to downgrade the calculator's overall rating.
