I first purchased the 14" 5 blade Great States reel mower and since I was very pleased with it, I purchased this 18". I like the handle on this one better than the 14". Of course, it does cut a bit wider path so that saves some time and effort. I'm 63 and have no problem using either one. If you allow your grass to get very high, it will take some extra push, otherwise it's as simple as walking. After reading a previous review, I wanted to mention there is screws that allow the blades to lower/raise and move the blades closer into the cutter bar. Only turn the screws ever so slightly. I suggest going to youtube and look up how to video for reel mowers. If the blades are too close to the cutter bar, you may hear a grinding noise and have a bad to no cut. If the blades are too far from the cutter bar, it won't cut the grass. I mow my grass usually about twice a week since it has been a rainy season. If it is a dryer week, I can get by with mowing just once. The settings on these mowers are factory set and they do a good job of having the blades correct to the cutter bar. However, you might get one that needs a little adjusting and with time you may need to adjust it. Hope that helps.
Lifted it out of the box, easily put on the handle, then took off across the lawn. Little twigs don't matter. Cuts the grass easily. Pushed easily. Saving on $$$$$. No more electric mowers for me. I have 4 broken B&D Electric mowers to sell for parts. Love the peaceful sound it makes. Easy to clean. Easy to store. Can pick up and carry. Can do it anytime of the day or night due to no noisy motor running. Grass can be a little long and it still cuts it.
This mower is perfect for touch up work to keep the grass down up close to my house and areas that grow more quickly. I have a regular yard man but sometimes he does not mow for long stretches of time so this is really helpful to keep the grass under control till he mows again. This mower will not cut tall weeds and it will not roll over sticks, rocks, or other debris so you will need to pick up anything it its path before cutting the grass and use hand held snippers to get rid of the tall weeds. It is very easy to assemble and is already pre-set so there are no adjustments to be made just roll it onto the lawn and you are good to go! Great little grass cutter for the price!
I love it! No gas or oil to deal with! Very low maintenance! Just some WD40. I recommended it to a friend and I quote her, "I ordered. I assembled. I mowed. I love it!" I am in total agreement with her.
First time using this type of mower. My lawn is combination of St Augustine and Bermuda-type grass. Mower cut the bermuda-type grass good despite it being a little tall. I usually cut my grass every five days, but its been 10 days with this mower. It cut St Augustine grass good too, but it wouldn't cut really tall and thick St Augustine. You got to mow often. I needed to go over grass twice to get a complete cut, but that was because my speed varied and grass was tall. You need to push fast. You can sell your treadmill or stepper. This gives you a great cardiovascular workout. I can't say this enough! You MUST follow manufacturers directions and remove ALL limbs, sticks, and twigs from the grass. A twig the size of a toothpick will instantly stop the blades and you. This is a must! I have Live Oak trees, which drop branches and twigs. Got to rake ahead of mowing. I am very pleased with grass as it is cut as smooth as my snapper mower. It does take longer and more work, but one reason I bought this reel mower was to be more self-sufficient. I would recommend the mower and get a blade sharpener stone. My photo shows mowed next to unmowed grass.
This mower is okay, it was just a little tough to cut weeds, it took more than one time to go over them. Its good for someone who doesnt want to mess with gas and it doesnt take up very much room.
Never having had one before... I suppose it is possible that all these type of mowers are a bit difficult to adjust height on but it works just fine after spending a half hour to set it up. We have had if for a few weeks and used it several times and it works just fine.
Cuts grass great, but we have dandelions about 6 inches tall here and there in the yard. It will not cut them, only bends them over. I just get them with shears. I definitely recommend it.
This mower does exactly what I had hoped. It's easy to use, light and sturdy. Where the grass is particularly long or thick it may take a few passes, but I don't find that a problem. It's so pleasant to mow my small yard and hear nothing but the swishing of the blades and smell nothing but fresh-cut grass!
I recently installed 1,000 square feet of a low growing variety of sod. I decided to go even greener and retire my old highly polluting gas rotary mower. It could be the one they sent me isn't adjusted correctly but it definitely requires more effort than one I had 30+ years ago. [I know, I am 30 years older now...} Fortunately the lawn is level, no weeds, sticks, branches etc. The blades don't spin freely. It seems the bed is too close to the blades. Sure makes a lot of noise. Maybe over time it will get broken in. Also, it says right on the box "made in China". I would have preferred to purchase one made in the USA and I thought this was. It is model 815-18.
