Firs of all I got this train set for free to use and leave my honest opinions about it. This train is amazing. It is every Christmas lover , train lover, or polar express lovers dream. I had been looking for a train for my Christmas tree so to receive this one for free was perfect! This train is just amazing it is very easy to put together, it goes forward, backward, has the remote control, 2 characters the guy and the little boy from the movie. The fire on top of the train can flip so it can just be snow or you can have the fire. Theres a little thing to place the boy on top of the train next to the fire so he doesnt fall off when the train moves. With the controller you can make the train go forward, backward, stop, you can do a whistle, say "all aboard the polar express", or a bell. The train even has a light on the front of it! It takes 6 C batteries that do not come with it and the remote takes AA batteries that it does not come with but thats not a big deal. The battery life on both is awesome and lasts a long time. I would highly reccomend this train for anyone wether its just for play or for around your christmas tree!
This Polar Express train set is very easy to setup & runs on batteries. So make sure you have 6 C batteries & 2 AA batteries (for the remote controller) because, they are not included. The train set includes 12 curved and 4 straight track pieces that fit together to make a 55 by 72 inch oval track. The tracks are easy to put together, there is no screwing or hardware needed. Just a simple click and snap, and the tracks are put together. This set also includes, steam locomotive, tender, passenger coach, observation coach, remote control, bell (that fell off Santa's sleigh) & three figures. We (me & my kids) really liked that this train set is highly detailed and the observation car has a disappearing hobo on top of it, which was an extra surprise. The disappearing hobo generated a lot of giggles & the little ones told me it was magic. You can also sound the whistle, ring the bell, and play "All Aboard The Polar Express!" while the train goes around the track. The engine has built-in sound that makes a steam chuff noise. It also makes a steam brake release noise when it stops (very realistic sounding). The kids kept yelling "ChooChoo!", when the train was going around the tracks & were just mesmerized by how realistic the sounds were. They kept telling me it's like a real train. There are also 2 lights on the train (one on front of the engine) and also one on the back that is red and flickers & looks like burning coal. The figures that are included (the conductor and boy figure) can also sit on top of the train as well. They didn't fall off or move, even when the train was going around the tracks at full speed. Was happy that there were figures included as well. A lot of train sets don't include anything besides the train & train tracks, so figures are always a great bonus. The train set was setup on a hard even surface in the front room & the train went out around the tracks very smoothly, even at the different speeds with out any issues. The remote control has clearly marked buttons, so kids can easily operate it without any problems. With the remote control you can also make the train go backwards (which they very much enjoyed). This is really a fantastic model and very true likeness to the Polar Express in the film. The set is larger than I expected, which we were pleasantly surprised about. It has great authentic train sounds (sounds like a real train is near you), including bell and whistle. The working headlights also made the train more realistic looking. Overall it's nice and durable & easy to assemble and disassemble. Also fit nicely back in the box for easy storage. Although, it didn't end up staying in the box very long before, I had to reassemble & keep it out for the little ones. It's a very nice train set & is a must have for any little Polar Express or train fan. It definitely exceeded mine & my kids expectations! A+ train set in our book!
I am thrilled to have this train. It is modeled after the train in the Christmas movie "The Polar Express". It is a full sized train, G scale. It comes with the engine, coal car, and two passenger cars. It has no caboose, but I have added that on my own. This train has a plastic track, and is battery operated, 6 C cells or 1 9 volt to run the train and 2 AA for the remote. When my children were young, I had an electric train that was put around the Christmas tree, but I was always afraid of something catching fire or one of the children getting shocked. Not a problem with this train, and I really like that. My five year old grandson love this train. He has learned to put the train on the tracks and run it. I never let that happen with my old electric train, so the young children always had to have someone run the train for them. The train is now back in its box. It stores very well in the box it came in. Once opened you can't trust the handle for carrying it though, the box seems to heavy for that, once it is all opened up, Could be the way I opened it, don't really know. I can't wait to see the expression on my grandsons face when he sees this train running round the Christmas tree, with the little village that will be put on the inside of the oval track. Nothing small about this train, including the fun and smiles it will bring
I received this train through Walmart's Spark Review Program. I requested this for review because my husband loves Lionel trains and is particular to this brand. He only owns O-Guage which is smaller than the G-Guage. What I like about it is you really can appreciate the detail of the train because of its size.When I seen the box it made me smile because it reminds you of Christmas. Being a Polar Express train of course it looks like the train from the movie. I love the vintage look. It has such style and detail to it. You get the steam locomotive has a head lamp and sounds,. A tender (coal car);this is the car where all the C batteries go. There is an observation car with a disappearing hobo who lives on top of the car and disappears when he doesn't want to be seen. You use your finger to make him disappear. There is also a passenger car. There are twelve curved tracks and four straight tracks. You can make a circle,extended circle or an oval design track. There is also a conductor Tom Hanks figure and Billy on a snow stand. There is a large "Santa Sleigh Bell' that is from the movie that would make a great Christmas tree ornament. There is a wireless remote control. This takes 2 AA batteries. The remote has forward,stop,reverse. There is a bell and whistle buttons. There is an announcement button that says. "All Aboard". "This Is The Polar Express" The voice sounds like Tom Hanks. In order for the train to run you have to turn on the remote switch on the controller to on. The coal tender which is behind the engine has a power plug that must be inserted in the back of the engine. Then the power activation button must be pressed. This is on top of the engine. Then turn the dial on the remote to move the train. The train makes realistic sounds like chugging and brake squealing. The set comes with batteries. Unfortunately the C batteries were dead. I purchased C batteries and ran the train for over 2 1/2 hours non stop to check the battery life. You can purchase a 9.6Volt rechargeable battery if you desire. You will also have to buy a charger to charge that battery. The only issue my husband had with the train is that the coupler to connect the cars together is difficult to connect whereas the O-Guage trains just snap together. This is the first train set that I was able to run on the floor because my cats couldn't knock them over like the O-Guage trains. All in all I think this train is a wonderful edition to place around the holiday tree.
I am very happy with this set, it runs great, and the detail on it is just like from the movie. My kids are big fans of the movie and the book and they were super excited to get this, as soon as it came we opened it up and put it together, I really appreciated that everything you needed was included in the box, even the batteries. I have seen other reviews on this and they stated that they were missing either the batteries or the figurines or maybe both, but I did not have that problem, my box was complete with everything. This is a big train set with plenty of track, and putting it together was not very difficult but I would suggest that an adult help out because the tracks do need to snap together tightly and getting the train straight on the tracks with the couplings can be a little tricky. Once on the tracks and hooked up the train runs very smooth, in forward or reverse, and you can control how fast you would like it to go, also a very nice feature is when it stops, it actually slows to a stop and makes some sounds just like a real train. As far as the actual train sounds go, I think the volume is good, not too loud, but it would be nice if it had an option to lower it. The figurines are nice but quite small which is why I believe the age recommendation is for 4 and up, you get 3 of them, the boy, conductor and the hobo (he is attached to the top of the train), and as a bonus you also get Santa's bell. The train and tracks are all plastic and overall I think the quality is good, the train is big and has a good weight to it, also the detailing is great, the tracks are very sturdy and hold together very tightly, I have not had any issue with them coming apart. So, this amazing train showed up at our door today and it was like Christmas morning in our house. The Polar Express is a big part of our holiday traditions and this was the icing on the cake for our kids. The train is large, detailed, and good quality. It has two passenger cars, the engine, and the car that carries the coal. There's even little figurines of the little boy and conductor from the movie. Once we put the track together, added all the batteries (6 C batteries and 2 AA), and set the train up, we had a blast. Giggles are priceless. The remote is extremely easy to use and our 3 year old was able to control it. There are three sound buttons, one makes the bell sound, one is the conductor saying, "All aboard! This is the Polar Express", the other is the choo choo sound. Absolutely love having this for our Christmas celebration this year! Simply magical.
Lionel train review Great Detail, no batteries included. Tracks are tad hard to snap into place , and difficult to line the wheels up with the tracks and the couplers .. Every time I got the wheels lined up with the tracks the coupler came undone. And vice verse. But considering I have never had a train nor have I EVER, PUT ONE TOGETHER BEFORE NOW ... It only took me 30-40 mins start to finish to completely do a round configuration approx 4.5 feet by 4.5 feet. Circle nearly completely encircled my 5x7 area rug. Almost, I would love to see this going around a Christmas tree would be awesome. As it was I had fun playing with it .. SEE VIDEO. No this train does not produce steam, I see this question a lot, it is a sturdy high quality construction AND YES THAT IS TOM HANKS VOICE, AS THE CONDUCTOR of the Polar Express as in the movie. And pics great detailing in the figurines. Batteries were Not included. And the large "Sliegh" bell ornament is exactly like the silver bell given to the boy at the end. By Santa .. It is incredibly beautiful. And rings loud .. Lol when mailman brought my package to me .. You could hear it ringing from inside the shipping box load and clear.. The mail man thought I had a Santa suit or horse Bridle ! Too cute. When I was little I always wanted a train to go around my tree. It was so very nostalgic to put this together I felt like a little kid on Christmas Eve three configurations avail I did the smallest one and it very substantially large enough to go around a large tree. Awesome truly splendid!

The long passenger cars alone are 13"Lx4 3/4"H. I was surprised to learn the G-Gauge train is larger than O-Gauge. The authentic detail and size of this train is VERY IMPRESSIVE. The TRACK is EASY to ASSEMBLE! They simply snap on and snap off easily, but are sturdy hard plastic. You receive 12 CURVED TRACK PIECES and 4 STRAIGHT TRACK PIECES. You have THREE TRACKS you can make. The LARGE OVAL is 72"x55" and the CIRCLE is 55" and variation of OVAL. They are all 55" W. The lg OVALS ARE LONGER. I chose the 55" circle which was easy to put together by joining all curved pieces. I can't help but SMILE when I watch it run. The remote control gives you the options of: "ALL ABOARD!", Whistle Sound, and Bell Sound. The sounds are GREAT! And, it also makes that nice "chugging" train sound as it operates. 'Fascinating to watch! It's just pure FUN! There was a 2004 MOVIE "Polar Express", starring TOM HANKS (playing multiple parts) which obviously inspired this set, making it a favorite of many. TO WATCH OUT FOR: 1) OBTAIN 6 "C" BATTERIES for Coal Car 2)OBTAIN 2 "A" BATTERIES FOR REMOTE CONTROL and importantly, PREPARE FOR A LARGE SURFACE AREA for the Train as the WIDTH is 55". You need a LARGE AREA for this impressive train. I HAD JUST 2 PROBLEMS but they were merely due to my personal situations: 1) I wanted to put it on my dining table w/my Christmas village but it is too wide for the table and 2) Since I am not that well coordinated, 'had some difficulty keeping the cars from falling off the track. But, I had it on the floor & it's easier when you place cars on track at eye-level. With patience and when you get all the cars on...they stay on and it's definitely "good to go!" It's also very easy to put all the pieces back in to its designated storage box location (w/sturdy styrofoam protection) for storing and with nice handle, the box is easy to move. With the set comes the Owner's Manual/Instructions, Warranty to activate, Free membership in "Lionel Railroader Club"application which gives Lionel discounts (can join online). Also included is info on "Lionel Collectors Club of America" est 1970. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Remember, you can also ADD PIECES, DECOR, etc. from Lionel if you desire.
This is a fantastic replica of the Polar Express train from the movie. My son loves this movie and has been asking us for a bigger, more life-like model for years. Luckily for us we were able to test this out and not have to pay the price tag. You should of seen the look on his face when he got this train! It was Christmas to him! We set it up. Takes AA and C batteries so have some on hand. We built the tracks into an oval around and under our dining room table since really we had no where else to build it and keep it out of the way. Yah it's that big! My 10 year old set it up all alone so it's pretty easy for that age to handle and set up alone. The remote makes sounds like "all aboard, this is the polar express!" And the train chugging sounds. It also goes forward and reverse with the simple press of the remote. The only negative comment I received from him was that he stated the remote HAD to be pointing directly at the train for the train to move. If it is not pointing at the train the train just stops. He said that even something in front of the remote causes it to stop the train. So definitely a need to be concerned if the child using the remote doesn't understand the need to keep the remote pointed at the train. It's not a deal breaker but just need to know the maturity of the child playing with it. This set also comes with the train conductor, the little boy and the man who sits on top of the polar express (hobo). The hobo man actually doesn't come off, he just folds in and out of the way. The other two characters can be put on top of the train in the footprints to hold them on top while the train is in motion. Overall I foresee this set being a part of our Christmas celebration for many years to come! Oh! I didn't mention the sleigh bell like in the movie that comes with this set! I have been wanting this set for quite a number of years. The Polar Express is our Christmas movie our family has watched every year together. Being a beginner train person, I figured I would start with a G gauge, as I have read they are easy but still a quality product. I was a bit disappointed it wasn't die cast metal, but a plastic set. However, it isn't flimsy plastic and it makes it easier to move around anyway. I was surprised on how large the track was. I thought it would fit on my pool table when not used around the Christmas tree. Alas, it is just a bit too wide to do so. I plan on getting a piece of plywood to set on top and start making a town/village or the North Pole. Your imagination is your limit. Hobby stores sell accessories, such as trees, grass, lights, etc. Watching stores after Christmas may net you in some light up villages on discount as well. But, I digress. The cars are large but easy to handle. My son loved the people that came with it. There are various places to put them. Like on the caboose, the front of the engine car or on the roof of one of the passenger cars. The sounds it makes will make any Polar Express fan smile with joy. The tracks are pretty simple to put together, but harder to take apart. So once set in a configuration, they shouldn't come apart unless you rather force them to. There is also a Santa's Sleigh bell that comes with for your tree! Can you hear it right? The only negative things we encountered using this, is sometimes the remote needs a reset (which you do by turning off the main power to the train) as it becomes non responsive. Also, sometimes the caboose become unhooked if it is not sitting on the tracks just so. All in all this isn't your cheap train in the box you get on a special, but a product that should last you many years if taken care of properly. If you are looking for a metal set though or wanting to expand your train world with other sets or complex accessories, then go for the O gauge. Lionel means you will be getting quality either way.
