I would tell anyone that wants to know that this sewing machine is like a dream machine. The features are so simple to learn and use but the portable part is wonderful. After 40 years of sewing on a hundred pound machine I love being able to move this machine about since I am in an apartment now. The first job was to sew blue jeans and my Brother sewing machine glided over the seams and smooth parts like silk. I love this machine and just getting started. First a dress and then hitting the quilts.
Everything looked like factory brand-new, right out of the box. All the attachments were packaged inside as well. One very helpful tip I learned from others online: read the manual! Knowing what needle can and cannot do certain stitches; matching said needle with the proper foot for a given stitch (especially true for the twin needle). All in all, it's a great machine with a lot of potential. This is a quilter, so the feed dogs do drop. A factory representative wrote on the new version of this same machine (SQ 9185): "There is a feed dog switch at the back of the machine to lower the feed dogs. When raising them again, you'll move the switch back to the up position and then turn the hand wheel 1-2 rotations towards you to re-engage the feed dogs." So happy I took a chance on a factory refurb. Again, take the time to actually get to know your machine. It's a tool with many, many options and functions.
I am a quilter etc. sewer and I love this machine. It's the machine I take with me to sew away from home. It's light, came with every attachment you can imagine and the stitches and alphabet work smoothly and sew beautifully even through 3 quilt layers. Mine was refurbished, came with a walking foot, large quilt table and a whole list of items, and everything is like new. Also when (at least 5) of the ladies I sew with saw it, they also bought it both new and refurbished. There is a great total demo on utube, I read the review about the person who had missing parts. I would have returned that in my case, since my sew at home machines are Berninas I needed all the various parts. New or refurbished with the parts it's a great machine. Mine came with everything on the box in the picture I uploaded. Oh and this machine and all the parts costs less than having my Berninas tuned up each year!
I love this sewing machine I'm so glad I saved money and bought this one when it arrived it looked brand new and it included everything this is my first sewing machine and I bought it to mostly make quilts home decor pillows etc pillowcase dresses and a few things I have pinned on pintrest ive been able to make so many thing this sewing machine is perfect for me
Sewing machine arrived promptly. I got it to replace my old Montgomery Ward machine. This machine is so much lighter. I love the drop in bobbin system and needle threading feature. Don't be put off by "refurbished". It is absolutely perfect.
Don't let the refurbished title sway you. This was a brand-new out of the box unit, with nothing wrong with it. It sews like a dream. I am so glad I was able to get a great deal on a name-brand machine. Would recommend it to others.
Good affordable machine. Not heavy at all and easy to use for my quilt's piecing. I think I saved a lot buying this refurbished machine. I don't see any thing wrong with it, I even have different foot attachments that goes with the machine that I did not have to buy. It serves the purpose for me. I have two other very expensive machine but I am using this also.
I intended to sew in the past, but after becoming frustrated with the machines I bought, I ended up selling them; I tried with different cheap ones (only want them to fix rips), and found it easier and even more economic to buy new clothes than fix them. This time I found this machine while looking up something else on walmart.com . In the description, seemed to have all the pros that I wanted in a sewing machine; The instructional CD doesn't play in my computer, so I look up the instructions on utube, and I followed it carefully. The written instructions are helpful too. I have been using it for about ten days, and its being great. I ad sew a heavy coat, two pairs of jeans, stretch nylon leggings, and a dress; the thread hasn't break at all. I use it in medium speed with a tension of 2.5, because I am just learning. The key here is "read the instructions" and it will be fine. One last thing, it comes with everything mentioned . 19 accessories that included the ones already on the machine; some are in the drawer, and some in a little see through bag; so don't panic if you don't see them all right away, like I did. The machine is excellent!! Here is the instructional video site https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNWsFlS1Csw
I am renewing my relationship with sewing. The last project I started was over twenty one years ago. It was a quilt for my first grandchild. I started it, but never finished. I did pack it away in a box with hopes that I would complete it before she was born. That did not happen either. I decided to renew my relationship years later with a sewing machine for my birthday. I found this one that had been refurbished, at Walmart.com at a great savings over the regular price and decided to give it a try. I was a little disappointed at first because the box had a little water damage. My initial response was that I was sending it back. I unpacked it and started to test it out. The monogramming feature did not work. It was only repeating one letter. The self threading needle feature did not work. I was ready to pack it up and send it back. I had read some negative reviews on it and was looking for failure. After being frustrated for about an hour, I decided to watch the video and read the manual. I must say that following the instructions and not relying on my memory from 21 years ago and the negative reviews, set me straight. I had to clear the memory after using the monogram feature, and just a little tweak with the self thread needle and it worked just fine. I have not had a chance to try out all of the feature yet, but reading your manual first, and watching the video, and using them as a reference is the best place to start. I am finishing the quilt that I started, and looking forward to starting a new one when that one is complete. This may not be a full review of all the features, but just use the resources provided and then you may be pleasantly surprised. Not bad for the bucks!
The Brother RSQ9185 is a very good sewing machine for casual sewing and small quilting projects, especially for the price. The online description said it came with a variety of snap on feet and other supplies including the specialized screw driver, double needle, bobbins, etc. The machine works perfectly, but came with only one bobbin, one needle, a zig zag foot, a walking foot, and quilting foot. Without the screw driver, the specialized walking foot cannot be attached. Even the needle can't be changed. For me, it was not a deal breaker because I was replacing a Brother machine that had been dropped, and I owned all the accessories from the previous machine. I called Brother about the missing accessories and was told since it was a refurbished machine they would not replace them. Therefore, I would caution buyers, that this machine may not be complete, and you may need to buy needed accessories to use it. Other reviews stated that their machine was complete and like new. This was not my experience.
