This has seriously got to be one of the best investments my family has ever made! The entire top white lid at the top comes off, (see the picture). No worries of impurities, because this dispenser comes with a TDS water tester, and they're not kidding when they say "zerowater." (Meaning no impurities at all after passing through the filters). And the only dispenser I've seen available online with shipping that has filters. I used the water tester on my tap water and on my pitcher water filter, and was astounded at the levels of impurities. This dispenser filters them all out to the level of zero! The water cooler and/or heater does not run constantly, (a plus for energy-conscience folks and perhaps a minus for those who want it at full-peak cold or hot on demand). It cools and or heats to a certain temp. and then automatically turns off for a while, then turns back on. You always have the option of shutting of the heating or cooling element by the switches on the back. The cold takes a while longer to cool, (and is most cold just after the cooling light turns off). The hot water you could leave off, turn on the switch, and have piping hot water in two minutes or so. The cold water takes a bit longer to cool. But I absolutely love this dispenser! It won't fit on your counter unless you have lots of space between it and cupboards, but it definitely sits well on a table.
The filtering tests fine but there is a terrible plastic taste and smell to the water. We have had this for about two weeks and I have filled this each night and completely emptied in the morning in hopes more plastic taste would be absorbed. I even washed this with water before installing and ran a good bit of water through it.
