This came as the primary ratchet in my first socket set that I bought from walmart 10 years ago. I have used it quite a bit and even abused it a couple of times. I don't recommend abusing it. But it's not broken and given that it's Stanley, I would get another one. It has a good weight in the hand and holds on to sockets tightly. I would recommend this to people.
I've used this tool quite a few times since it was purchased, and it seems to operate fine. No complaints.
This ratchet came with a multi-peice set. I've used it several times a week for the last 2 years. Use it on multiple vehicles and tractors. 2 trucks, a Harley, 2 tractors, and 6+ small engines. I have yet to have a tooth strip. Greased it once after getting it, and it's action is smooth. The high polished chrome has held up really well too! Can't beat the Stanley Lifetime Warranty either! This is an unbiased review. I was not offered any incentive of any kind. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
My parents moved to another state 14 years ago and gave me a Stanley tool set before they did. I've used it to build cribs, repair vehicles as a mechanic for a few years, install training wheels, removing training wheels and pretty much being my families got to for broken items. These tools have never failed, are comfortable and affordable. I strongly recommend them. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
A good solid tool that met a need that I had
This Stanley Pear Head rachet is a good buy. I have the 1/4 inch one as well and that was a great buy so I picked this one up as well. It does "reverse" itself sometimes, but as you use it, it goes aways, just need to break it in. The finish is great and the tool is heavy and feels of quality. Better than the Chinese one's from HF. Don't get me wrong, it's no Snap On or Mac rachet but then you would pay 4X as much for it. For a shade tree, weekend warrior mechanic it does just fine. Pick one up and see for yourself. I have never had the ballbearing on the head drop a socket and the inner workings are all made of steel. I took it apart to grease the inside for smoother operation and to prevent premature wear.
I've had this ratchet for a little over a year. It's held up alright but after about a year of everyday use, I've noticed some of the gears--either that or the pall aren't fully engaging. Now I've broken loose lots of bolts that I proabably should have used a breaker bar on. Regardless, it does the job but it isn't the most durable. Good value for the price though. The ratchet would not lock to keep from turning in both directions. I even tried holding the lever in position with my thumb, but it still made a sound like striped gears.
Second one broken within 3 months. I don't do anything heavy duty and figured the first broken ratchet was just a fluke. Now the replacement has also stopped working so I'm using the cheap, no brand unit a salesman gave me years ago. When you try to flip the ratchet the lever just spins and won't catch. This is real junk.
I bought this Stanley 3/8" Pear Head Quick Release ratchet handle a few months ago and the head where you control the direction of the rotations came apart today in my hand in many pieces. I was expecting a Stanley ratchet would be better than the Canadian Tire entry level ratchet in which I was replacing. Very disappointed in the quality of this product.
