I do not know how to play the violin but did not feel I could give this as a gift to my five year old who is excited to take violin lessons: -I (my husband and my 15 yr old daughter) were unable to make a noise on this -the bow threads were frayed and broken out of the box -the overall impression was very delicate- not a good item for a young child to learn on. I returned the item before Christmas because I felt it would be too dissapointing to give to my child since she had such high expectations.
