I am very new to geocaching having only logged 20 finds so far. The Magellan Explorist GC has been very user friendly and seems to get me very close to the actual find. It is a great way to get started in the geocaching world. By being able to download caches from geocaching.com you have all the information you need right at your fingertips without the necessity of needing a cellphone app as a backup.
This GPS is great for Geocaching. Like the other Magellan GPSs the menus are easy to figure out so there is no need for a user manual. Other users have had problems with signal in thick trees. I can get a full signal sitting in my house. Thick trees and overcast, same thing. With this one you have to be careful not to have it on "suspend" mode when storing it. I made that mistake and killed the first set of batteries. It starts up very quickly and connects to the satellite in no time. the accuracy id say gets me within the 10 feet. It even put me right on top of a Geocache. The only disappointment about this one is when you stop walking the map spins. I never had this problem with a Magellan GPS but i got used to it the second time out. I found out bumping the joystick so I have the cursor on the map just my navigating arrow moves so I can still have a good sense of direction.
Awesome GPS,bright screen, great signal reception even in the dense trees we were in,very accurate. Easy operation and nifty extras.
I bought this GPS after seeing the reviews and wanted something simpler to use specifically for geocaching at a good price. We had a PN-20 and had such a difficult time with it that I was hesitant to spend the money to get another GPS. So far we have been very happy. We like the paperless details for each cache on this GPS. Having the last 10 logs helps too. This is so much better than printing it off. It was easy to set up and easy to load the caches we wanted. My only gripe is what I saw with other reviews is that the screen is almost unreadable in sunlight. In the shade or in the woods it is easy and clear.
It takes some getting used to. It has many capabilities that a beginner would have to play around with to get used to. Holds all the info from the caching site that u like to refer back to in the field.Battery life is good. I use lithium ultimates, they last a good 18hrs per pair. When the memory gets full it will not load correctly, just dump the unit, using the pc and reload with caches u havent done. easy to read, great for setting caches. I would reccomend this to anyone enjoying geocaching.
I've been using my phone till I got this device. I've used it mainly for geocaching, however... witht he waypoints feature, it will come in handy for hunting as well. that being said there are better models out there for hunting for sure, I was interested mainly in geocaching tho, and for that... it rocks!
Overall we have been very impressed with this unit, and the ability to load it with detailed information for thousands of caches from Geocaching.com is exactly what we were looking for. Our primary GPS for caching is the iPhone4, but when we are "out in the boonies" with no cell/data signal, the iPhone is almost useless - this has proven to be a very capable backup, and we look forward to using it when traveling out of the country since we do not have (or want to pay for) an international data-roaming plan for our phones. Our only complaint has been noted by several others - the directional guidance works perfectly when you are walking, but it just starts turning randomly when you stand still. Takes some getting used to, and is the one feature we feel truly needs improvement.
This GPS takes me to the coordinates very well. I was extremely disappointed that it won't give me any of the information that is available on geocaching.com or even on a smart phone without becoming a premium member. I read all the reviews and none of them said anything about that. It says it gives you a "paperless" geocaching experience but that's only possible if you're a premium member I guess.
I got a Magellan Explorist GC for Christmas. I was super excited and couldn't wait to try it out. Opened the box, but in the batteries, presses the power button and...nothing. I changed the batteries multiple time and still nothing. I called Magellan customer service and they want me to FedEx/UPS mine to them and then they will send a new one. Mind you, I have to pay for shipping. I can return it to Walmart for free. I'm going to try a Garmin eTrex Venture HC, the reviews look promising.
1. Impossible to read in bright (sunny) daylight. 2. Text is too small. 3. Is advertised to be used on a bicycle. Maps don't know any bike trails Probably good for Geocaching and hiking. Returned item after 2 weeks of trying; including the bike mount.
