Horsetail (Shavegrass Silica) (Certified Organic) - 450 mg Horsetail Equisetum arvense L. Family:Equisetaceae. Other Names: Horsetail; field horsetail; prêle de champs (French); Ackerschachtelhalm (German); coda di cavallo, equiseto dei campi (Italian). Description: The horsetail family was already present in the Carboniferous age and is a relict of the early evolution of land plants. Horsetail produces unbranched fertile stems in the early spring, with brownish spore-bearing cones at the tips. In summer, several sterile stems of up to 0.5 m emerge, each having numerous nodes with four or five side branches around each node. The leaves are reduced to minute bracts arranged in a circle at each node. Also used are E. hyemale and E. fluviatile. The drug is sometimes adulterated with marsh horsetail (E. palustre). The latter is distinguished from other species by the length of the first internode of the lateral branches, which is shorter than the leaf sheath around the main stem where it is attached. Origin: Northern temperate zone (North America, Europe and Asia). The sterile summer branches are wild-harvested in eastern Europe. Parts Used: Dried stems (Equiseti herba).
