Yes, you do have to put this together. That would be easier had instructions been provided; it comes with no instructions so you will need to figure it out for yourself. The drawers are thin cardboard so don't expect too much from them. I used glue and rubber bands to hold them until the glue set. I am painting all the pieces before I assemble it so, hopefully, it will look better when I get done.
