My Cloud Home is a basic product with no features to manage drive. Their is no administrative account to oversee invitees accounts. You also are not able to access it without an account. When I sent back my My Live Book, I thought I was getting a similar functioning drive but I was wrong. You cannot use any of the WD backup products available only Windows 10 file history. I wish WD would add some feature to see it on my local network and manage the drive.
Thankfully I'm an IT guy because "My Cloud Home" is not easy to setup and install. You see the term "Home" and think it will be easy-as-pie for anyone. It isn't. They don't make it clear that there a new separate Discovery app for My Cloud Home. And forget trying to install the promised Acronis backup software -- it is not compatible (you have to figure that out on your own). Acronis is the single biggest reason I bought a WD NAS unit. Not having Acronis work, and not spelling that out before purchase, is a HUGE disappointment. WD has always been our gold-standard, sadly not now.
It is slow. It seems like a distant external attached drive. Now there are concerns about hackers erasing your whole disk. Updating the system does not seem easy. It keeps erroring out when I use the software that was designed for it. Registering the device using the software does not seem to work. An online system such as this should require 2FA to be accessed so that only the registered devices have access. It should also be more intuitive to monitor and maintain this device for OCD PC middle class technicians. What is the USB port on the back for. I care more about maintaining the device than watching movies on PLEX.
Just okay, unfortunately this didn't meet my expectations. I anticipated being able to directly save to this NAS but I'm only able to save to it via their cloud app that I have to log into. From my home Wireless LAN, I should be able to point devices to this to save without having to go through a manger web app interface. I have wired surveillance cameras that I need a backup plan to save video onto a NAS but cannot do it with this drive. Connecting from a phone or laptop is no problem although, for some reason, Mac's TimeMachine doesn't recognize the NAS unless I manually login each time - sort of defeats the purpose. For my purposes, this is an ineffective NAS drive. If you are only going to save files from laptops and phones, I guess its okay but I wouldn't count on it. I think I'm going to just use it connected directly to my laptop via USB, again, defeating the purpose but its better than the way the solution was designed.
Locked into the poorly designed WD Discovery App for separate/private share access. Shares can not be mapped or accessed without first logging into WD Discovery. The WD Discovery app does not allow for the storing of credentials for easier access. Each user of the drive must have a WD account in order to use this device. #CrappyDesign
Got this as a replacement for the mybooklive trade in because of the hack. I also have a regular MyCloud Drive. Both the MyBookLive and MyCloud Drive allow me to use backup software with them. This MyCloudHome, doesnt seem to let backup software recognize or utilize it as a NAS. I want this functionality. MyCouldHome does have a sync functionality from hard drive but doesn't let you control where it puts it on the drive(least not that i can find). You have to use a program called wd discovery to get a network drive mapping and logon to it before it will work. Also utilizes My cloud app on phones to backup pictures and share this is nice functionality, but giving other family members access there is not admin access to all info on drive. Other Family member have to have there own logon. if you share a folder with them they have full access to the folder, cant just give read access. Drive is very loud, and took over a day to sync picture and video's over to it. I really like the MyBookLive and My Cloud Drive, but this MyCloudHome lacks functionality.
I bought this 4 months ago the interface sucks plus in several months they will stop having the System and they say there should be a 3rd party taking over don't waste your money I have a my cloud from 15 years ago and 3 years they did the same thing with that one I I lost the ability to connect unless I'm on the home router so in a year or two you probably will have the same issue with a brand new my cloud home
This new version of the WD cloud product has far less functionality that prior versions. You can only have a small folder on your desktop where before you could share the device on your network. I've actually powered this device off and am using older versions of the product until they die.
Can't comment about the drive and software as I did not use. Thought I was purchasing an External Network Storage device to configure and share the drive storage. When searching for a NAS, the “WD – My Cloud EX2” and “WD – Cloud Home” were listed in the same area. I did not realize the “WD – Cloud Home” version was not configurable. So, I have boxed it up, hoping that I can return this product and purchase the EX2 model.
Really a Crap! Before I bought, I expect it can perform like a OneDrive or Google Drive that creat a local folder on my computer and automatically syn the file with the my private cloud. But just few days after i bought, WD just discontinue this function so that i always need to access the data through the internet. And recently, the Local Network Access function also not work. what WD is doing. the speed also super slow. I just feel like I throw my money into the sea.
