My father has profound hearing loss, dementia, and is in a nursing home. He was unable to manage his hearing aides and struggled terribly with communication. The pocket talker makes a big difference in his day to day life, however, I recommend purchasing a good pair of headphones, the cheap foam ones won't do the job.
I bought this at my doctor's advice for my 103 year old mother who has great difficulty hearing. Her standard hearing aids are old and not functioning well, but mother loves the pocket talker because she now hears me well. It works best when you talk into the speaker, does not seem useful for my mother for hearing group activities. My unit came without ear buds so check the details of your purchase to be sure you have everything needed. The unit is monaural but we are using some old stereo ear buds we had, only one of the two ear buds is utilized which is confusing for mother. The first old stereo ear bud we used quit working; this was not part of the purchase but made me think that a quality ear bud is needed.
If you dont have hearing aides to pair you need to buy earbuds. That wasn't clearly explained to my satisfaction. But once you obtain the right earbuds the device is fabulous for my auntie who is profoundly hard of hearing and seemed to awaken!!!! Highly recommend trying this with a demented elderly loved one.
