I keep the suet in a wire cage fully exposed to the weather. The suet doesn't melt in the sun or wash away much even in a hard winter rain. The birds feeding on the suet in the cage include three species of woodpeckers (Flicker, Sapsucker, and Downy), Oregon Juncos, Chickadees, Nuthatches, etc... (I also have a covered cage seed cake feeder about 2 feet from the suet feeder). Birds perch and feed on the suet from the cage feeder as well as on the ground from the suet crumbs made by (especially) the woodpeckers. The ground feeders include other species such as Towhees. The suet cakes stores well for a long time on a shelf in my unheated garage. The suet draws starlings and I haven't yet figured out what to do about them.
My birds love it. I have a wide variety of birds who eat it. I have two suet holders and there are birds on both of them almost all the time. They are easy to replace in the holders,
Woodpeckers and blue jays love this suet. Great price and free delivery.
I've fed these suet cakes for years. The birds that frequent my feeders love them. I don't consider them ‘year-round' as they don't hold up in the heat warms into the 80's as it has done early this year. I don't feed suet cakes in warm weather anyway.
The most important things when buying suet packs are quality and price. This product excels at both. The first listed ingredient is suet. Not a filler. I have been using these for quite awhile and the birds (sometimes squirrels and raccoons) love them. A great value in my opinion.
These do melt in extremely hot temperatures, and if they are in direct sun, a lot of the day. They will get moldy if it rains, and then its humid. That happens with all seeds, too, so being diligent with cleaning and only putting out what is needed works best.
Product feeds multiple kinds of birds they seem to quite enjoy this product. One square only lasts 2-3 days at most.
Here in Oklahoma the birds are obsessed with the suet. As more birds find my feeders the more i have to refill. Originally went through 1 a week. now its every few days. Love watching the birds flock to my yard.
Cheap product no seeds as pictured usually cakes come as pictured this time different and almost not sealed see picture
Nasty soft product with very little, if any, visible seed. Pretty much soft lard that melts in the sun and makes a huge mess. This was selected by a shopper as a replacement for C and S Peanut Delight, which was out of stock. The peanut delight is great, but we hope to never have the “high energy” tubs of soft lard n our home again.
