The large, round roots are 4 to 6 inches in diameter, bright yellow, with a rich purple crown. Flesh is creamy-yellow turning to orange when cooked, and is fine-grained, sweet and of excellent quality. The American Purple Top rutabaga is known in Canada as the Swede Turnip. It is commonly used in soups, stews and winter vegetable dishes. Roots store well. Sow outdoors three to three and a half months before the first fall frost. Keep well-watered and cultivated.
