this a great value, I did check around for the best price before I bought from wal-mart I had it for a short time. Unfortunatley there was a piece missing, so I called meade and they had me send it back to them at no charge to me. I am waiting for it to come back now.when we did use it for about a week we couldn't believe the clarity of the stars

Excellent Telescope

I expected a basic, cheap telescope with a few gadgets to make it look more expensive. I got an excellent telescope with high quality that should give me years of great use. I had a little trouble sighting it in but once I followed the directions everything went great. The first night we were looking at a clear image of craters along the terminator on the moon.

I looked for six months for a high quality telescope I could afford and this telescope is at the top of the list. It is a Meade- the only brand I'd want to buy- and a reflector (not just a refractor). I paid $116.58 with tax and site to store (took 10 days) shipping. It is Walmart so if there are any problems I knew I wouldn't be stuck! There were no problems. I know I'm sacrificing the "find it for me" computer and motor but that just means I don't have to think about a battery, orienting, the motor breaking, etc. I know where Saturn and Jupiter are just, let me at em. The equatorial mount is a little complicated, so watch the DVD first before assembly (I installed to tube backward but it was easy to flip, install the mirror end toward the large fine adjustment knob). I had to use Quickplay on the computer to watch it, the video didn't auto boot on my laptop. Maybe on a DVD player it would be different. Remember that the big eyepiece is the lower mag. That fooled me the first night out. The viewfinder scope is tinted making it difficult to get used to. I'm telling all the con's, but this is an adult's telescope, from the best company at an unbelievable price.

After years of nagging my boyfriend to get a hobby, he told me he is interested in astronomy. So I decided to get him a telescope for his birthday. I knew absolutely nothing about telescopes, so I spent my free time learning what I could in a short period of time. After researching, it became obvious that this telescope is a good value, especially for a beginner. I gave it to him for his birthday, and he is absolutely thrilled with it! The first night he used it he was going on and on about how 'totally awesome' this telescope is - he was so excited! He has found this telescope to be very easy to use, the DVD that comes with it is very helpful for a beginner. This telescope is probably not as good as some of the $3000 telescopes I came across in my research, but for this price I would say it is an excellent value.

A good starter telescope

This scope is well worth Walmart's purchase price. The assembly manual is lacking though. I have never used a reflector scope before so a little more detail would have been helpful. The shortcoming is in the alignment and calibration areas. After several nights of viewing I finally figured out the alignment. The RA and Dec controls work nicely but the azimuth adjustment is lacking. When adjusting the azimuth you have to overshoot the target because the scope will fall below where you have aimed it when the azimuth knob is tightened. This is one of those annoyances that likely only goes away with the purchase of a much more expensive scope. The quality of the images are good. I was impressed when looking at Saturn's rings and the moon was very impressive.

An okay telescope

This is a pretty decent beginner telescope. You can see the moon very well with it, can barely make out the rings on Saturn, and can see the little specks that are Jupiter's moons. I also looked at the white smudge that is Andromeda Galaxy. It is very easy to set up and adjust. I have only one complaint, and that is the red dot viewfinder. It worked perfectly for a couple of months, but now seems to need realignment very frequently, even if I don't touch it. The two knobs on it (which I would think would control x and y axis) both seem to control x axis or nothing at all. Perhaps I damaged it myself. I now have to align it by turning the sight itself (instead of using the little knobs) at least twice every time I use it. I'd recommend it, just be careful with that red dot sight.

After researching several telescopes, I picked the Meade 114EQ-ASTR Reflector, mostly because of it's decent size apature, with a low price. The first night we took it out we had a great view of the moon. Last night we saw Saturn and one if it's moons. The view really shakes a lot but once it setteles down, it is pretty good. I think I will probably get some good use out of it before I upgrade to a much larger one, with a better mount and tripod. The Walmart Site to Store shipping took forever, but hey, it's free! If you want it any time soon, it is probably much better to pay for the shipping.

I reviewed telescopes online before making this purchase. For the price paid and the convinience of Site-to-Store delivery, I couldn't be happier. The only faults I have about the telecope is that I cannot seem to get the equilateral mount to work how it is supposed to and I cannot perform the tasks it states I can easily do (view Saturn's rings) with the equipment provided in the box. Personally, I believe that this telescope is a great way to start out observing the stars and would be a good introductory model to something more advanced.

Very Capable Telescope

After reading many reviews on many different brands and types of telescopes i decided on this one. The up front value on price and my preference for reflector telescopes made this an easy choice for an introductory telescope. I would recommend this to anyone looking to get their feet wet in astronomy. My only concern was the quality of the EQ mount, because with mine if I needed to go up in elevation to center on an object, i ended up having to go much higher than needed so when i let tightened the mount it would drop down on what i was looking at, then just fine tune from that point. Nothing major but would of been nice to center it and tighten and not constantly compensate for the slack in the EQ mount. This scope really does the moon justice for detail, and on a clear night Jupiter's cloud strands can be seen. I would recommend a 2x Barlow lens and filter set to really get the most this scope has to offer.

Ordered Scope with Home Delivery. Once Received it was missing all the Hardware to assemble. I called Meade and requested the missing Hardware. I was told the scope is foreign made so they do not have parts they only have completed packages so I had to package the whole thing up and send it to them and they would send me out a new one. I had to ship it to them at my own expense. I was told there was a week turn around time before I would get it back. Two weeks passed I called they still had not sent it out they said they were waiting for Proof of purchase. I told them it was in the box and I know they received it becasue i referenced the tracking numbers. They looked up the tracking numbers I provided found out the received it the week before I called and no one took any action, in there terms "some one forgot to update the notes in our system". They released a new scope for shipment. When I received the new scope all the hardware was included but this time, the bolts to adjust the tri pod did not fit. At this point I was upset with Meade and did not want to go through the same hassel I just did, for them to send me more junk. I went to Home Depot got a tap kit corrected the problem with the Tri Pod myself again at my expense. The scope itself is Great. Now that I have everything working I really enjoy it. I just wish Meade put the same quality into the accessories that that come with there products as they do on there scopes.
