Pros: Compact, Accurate, Quality Lenses, Strong Construction Cons: Other thoughts: Product was a gift for my husband. He loves it.
I just sold a Meade DS2114 reflector which was not very good for imaging. The ETX-80 I just got from Walmart which is a smaller scope, both objective and focal length, produces much sharper and clearer images with both my eyepiece imager, and digiscope camera adapter which is what I used with a cheep HP camera to snap this shot of the moon with.
Pros: Lightweight, Easy to Use Cons: Other thoughts: Was a gift for my 17 year old son. He enjoys very much. The Auto-Star is fun for finding objects you normally would not look for or know were even there. Great product if we upgrade it will be a MEADE product.
My husband has had a blast with this product. It was very easy to assemble and start using with the quick start guide. My husband has told all his friends and they are considering buying similar products. We will spend a lot of time this summer star gazing. The telescope is easy to operate and the pre-programmed sites are great. Excellent product for the price.
I realize there are better telescopes available. But for the beginner (like me), this scope works as advertised. My son and I had this thing out of the box and were looking at the rings of Saturn in about 45 minutes. Ok, my son had it looking at Saturn in 45 minutes. :-) I have always enjoyed looking at the night sky. Now I can actually see more than just tiny white dots. The GoTo feature works reasonably well. It gets you in the general area. This is helpful if you, like me, find it difficult to point to anything but the moon in the sky. The tripod is not real sturdy. The focus knob and the knob for the built-in Barlow feel inexpensive(cheap), but overall quality is good for an entry level telescope. I would recommend this scope to anyone that is looking for an introductory telescope that is fairly simple to use and has the GoTo feature that will have you looking at things you only imagined.
While better than the small cheap children's scopes, this is still a starter scope. The 90mm is a far better deal. You will out grow this scope fast. If you can afford it go for the ETX127. This scope could last you a life time. The GO-TO feature works, but you must calibrate the motors correctly and the instructions aren't that good. Better instructions so that you can get the Auto Star to work right are available on line. Try Weasner's site on the ETX scopes. Believe me, save a little more dough up and get a bigger scope. Diameter is everything when you are trying to see things.
