Wow! RPN!

I had one of the first ever HP-35 Calculators when they first came out. Got me through Statics and Dynamics Class. It was faster than a speeding slide rule. This new HP48 GII is awesome to say the least. If you don't like RPN - you can switch! I use it for everyday engineering problems. Works great!

I bought this for my home office because I love my HP15 so much. The first one was DOA. HP replaced it cheerfully. Since then I've used it very lightly and the keyboard is dying. It's not surprising as it always felt cheap. However, in the meantime, I've come to dislike the way that it in several ways. Many of the most commonly used functions are not easily accessible. The keyboard is poor and doesn't always register when you feel it click. Overall, this is an incredibly poor calculator at a premium price. I might try another HP when this finally dies because my HP 15 is 25 years old and works like new. Maybe they still make one this good.

I expected alot from this calculator. HP was recommended by my teacher (who has an HP48gx)because he has had one for decades. This model of the 48 series, for one, is technically not a 48 series model. It si a combo of 49 and 50. Also this model was not designed by an HP engineer. It was commissioned out to an independant calculator designer. The logic you expect it to work by is nothing like the other 48 series calculators. My teacher couldn't figure it out, and he has always had HP's. It is not user friendly.

My supervisor and I purchased this calculator 2 years ago, within 5 months the keys of both calculators started to become loose and made trying to do any calculations a real pain, I have since gotten another one using the warranty. Again within 5 months of use the keys became loose, I fixed it myself by putting tiny pieces of folded paper into the space between the faceplate of the calculator and the keys to hold them steady. I have been a long time user of HP calculators and am truly disappointed in the quality. Because the keys are loose, it makes it difficult to do any type of calculation. Becuase I am an engineer, using the calulator is a must. My supervisor has since purchased another calculator from a competitor.
