When our 9.6 volt Dustbuster died I started looking for a replacement. I was delighted to see that Black and Decker had a 18 volt battery pack model. I already have several Black and Decker 18v tools so having charged batteries was no problem for me. I like the fact that you can change the batteries and no longer need to throw away the entire Dustbuster like the other one just because the batteries die. It has the same suction as a 9.6 volt Dustbuster, the noise level is about the same. It comes with no attachments but the parts for the old Dustbuster work with it, though I rarely used them. The battery life is good, after 3 weeks it still runs strong on the same battery, but usually my vac jobs only take a few minutes, I am sure with prolonged use like cleaning out cars and vans it would deplete the charge after 20 minutes or so of usage. Advice to Ladybug32 complaining about the filters, all of the B & D filters are made of a plastic material and can be washed and dried, they last forever, plus they use the same filter as the 9.6 volt model. So wash your filter and start using it again. Kudos to B & D for making a replaceable battery pack vac, it makes a lot of sense for the environment not filling our landfills with old Dustbusters. I would highly recommend this vac to anyone looking to purchase a small hand held vacuum.
I bought this vac about a year ago and have bought 2 more since. This things has twice as much power as any other dust buster type vac. I have many other B&D power tools that use the 18v batteries so It is very convenient having quiet a few batteries always charged. If you are looking for a unit that can be charged without removing the vacuum then this is not for you, if you have other 18v b&d tools and extra batteries then this is a must have.
I have had several bad hand vacs before, but this one has been great so far! I love that the battery comes out of the unit to charge, and that if it does ever die, I can buy a replacement. This vac holds a charge well. I can clean out our mini-van and it still has juice to do more. I use this vac almost everyday to clean up after my two young boys. I love it.
I have had hand held vacs before. By comparison, this one is much bigger and heavier however it does a good job picking up stuff and is incredibly durable. Mine already fell off a high shelf and rather than breaking, it chipped the bucket it landed on. I don't think this is the best vacuum for pet hair on a sofa. I think a vac with a brush attachment would be more effective for that. Despite the lack of attachments, this product is very powerful and the inclusion of a chargeable battery is tremendously handy. You don't realize how much time you waste during an emergency clean up or an apartment-wide weekly vacuuming looking for and changing outlets. It's great to just be able to pick up your vac and go.
I got this as a Christmas gift last year. I wasn't really wanting or thinking I needed one at the time, but now I LOVE it! This thing really SUCKS! I had used other dust buster type vacs in the past and they had been a total joke, but this one has some AMAZING pick up power! I use it just about every day. Normally I use it for 15-20 min at a time and usually get 3-4 uses before I have to recharge. The only thing I would change is to make the light tell you when the battery is fully charged. It is a little loud for my taste, but totally worth it when you see how much suction it has.
I chose this cordless hand vac because it's the only one I could find in this price range with a user replaceable battery. It's ridiculous that most of these vacs have to be thrown out when the battery stops taking a charge because you can't replace the battery. Suction is just OK. Our Dyson hand held had much better performance. However, this vac runs and runs for a very long time on one charge, and it's a third of the price. (The Dyson ran for 5 minutes at time before the $75 battery stopped taking a charge.) I wish they offered attachments for this vac, like a crevice tool. I like the fact that I can purchase other B&D tools that can share the battery.
This hand vac is not worth the money. Does not have wall mount. Very heavy once the battery is in. Does not pick up small particals. The opening is at an angle and you have to hold it almost upright to get anything to vacuum up. I will most likely use this in the car or basement. Had to purchase another one for picking up kitty litter which is what I wanted this for. If I could, I would have returned it.
The “Platinum” B&D 18V Dust buster is a badly designed, nearly useless “Upgrade” of the 15.6V version. First, there is no charger/hanger storage device. The suction appears to be less then the older 15.6V version and there are no integrated or supplied accessories for crevice cleaning, etc. I made a bad choice, don’t you do the same.
With 18 volts, I expected more vacuum power. It's a sleekly designed product w/ good additional tools (though I had to call B&D when they did not come with original shipment as advertised), but the battery is not a Black & Decker battery like their shop tools. As other reviews said, it took too long to charge and the vacuum simply isn't strong enough. Only for very light duty that you could do with your own hands or a brush. I returned it.
This being my first hand vac I thought I would try one with a little more power, thus I went for the 18v I found in this one. I didn't know that after 14 hours of charging then 7 hours each time thereafter, I would only get 15 minutes (less for the first few cycles) to use it. Even at full charge the opening is to small to pick up anything much bigger than dust.
