I bought this bike so my wife and I could get some excercise together. We picked this bike because it is inexpensive and looked like a good starter tandem bike. The components are decent and the bike rides remarkably well. I had to fine tune the bike when I received the it.The rims needed to be trued and the brakes needed to be adjusted for better stopping power. I will be putting Mtn. bike style handlebars on the it because it will make it easier to control with wider bars. There is a learning curve with this bike, (ie. starting, stopping, turnig and shifting) I also installed a bike bell on the rear handlebars. It's a great way to let cars, other bikes and pedestrians know you are there, not to mention it gives the stoker something to do!
Shifting is great, smooth & accurate. My husband and just love the bike. We had another brand and did not like it as well, and it was more expensive. The only thing I would suggest is to get cages for the peddles. We have speedometers on the front and back, so we both have 1, This way I don't have to keep asking the speed.
Much better quality than expected. Easy to assemble but wheels will need truing. Everything worked out of the box, but had LBS tune it so it worked perfectly. It has tabs for mounting fenders/ racks. Bike is well worth the price. Rides and looks good! This bike seems to be solid and will be a good intro (and well beyond) to tandem riding. Shifters: Shimano revotwist Crank: 28-38-48 Front Derailer: Shimano something (altus?) Rear cluster: 14-16-18-20-22-24-28 Rear derailleur: Shimano Altus Tires: Kenda 700x38c path type (slicks would be nicer) V-brakes
Great out of the box value. I continue to become more and more amazed at what you can find for low $$ investment when searching for cycling complete bikes and lower end but usable parts. I will swap out parts like drivetrain, pedals, tires, seats, etc. to make this tandem rideable for our needs. Overall, if you look at what the name brand tandems offer including their unsavory markup you will be pleased with this product both in price point and quality of most parts on the tandem.
It was exactly what was advertised. Its a solid tandem for those new to riding and want to experience a two-seater. I would recommend an online search for reviews as there is one that goes into great detail. You will need to either do some of the work yourself if you consider yourself handy with a bicycle or send it to a bicycle shop. I happened upon a great coupon so I put it in the shop. You will want to have the wheels checked and true them if necessary and have the brakes and deraileurs adjusted. You will also want to either pull the bearings and clean and grease them or have a bike shop do it. They do come greased, but its a very thin layer. It will take practice and lots of communication when first riding. Make sure the person in the second seat (the stoker) knows that if they stop pedaling that you will be forced to stop pedaling. If you're married it will make for a great communication exercise! You will want to consider some improvements. The drive side (holds the synchronizing chain) is plastic, and you will want to change this out. You might also decide you want some thinner tires and some better pedals. These are improvements I plan to make as soon as I can. Otherwise I plan to enjoy this bike!
From the time the Kent Tandem Bicycle was ordered and received Site to Store was two weeks. It was easy to check on the progress of the order and when it was received at the store. The bicycle was packed ok and was in great condition when received. Keep in mind that if you use the Site to Store option to save the delivery charge, you need a big vehicle to transport it home. The box that it comes in is 6 1/2 foot long and about 4 foot wide and weighed about 50 pounds. So make sure you have the room to transport it to where you're going safely. I have been tinkering with bikes for a number of years; and I have found it very easy to assemble--common sense (directions were poor) I bought a road bike and they sent me directions for a beach Cruiser tandem. A couple of places where someone who never worked on a bicycle may have trouble would include hooking-up and adjusting the front brake and cable to the left lever, (front and back) but were relatively easy to adjust, and the front wheel had a slight wobble; do to how they pack it and it rubbed the frame which left two big scratches on the paint; but were also easily adjusted with a spoke wrench. If you don't have tools you mite want to ask someone who knows how to work on bikes or pay Wal-Mart to put it together for you. My wife and I will be using the bike on bike trails, and roads in ca. The bicycle looks great and rides very well. I am amazed at the quality, how well it shifts, and the complete absence of frame flex. I and my wife have little or no tandem riding experience with a 700 road bike. Prior to this bike, we have been riding some excellent quality road bikes. Within five minutes sitting on our new tandem we felt comfortable. I am a stronger rider than my wife; the tandem bicycle allows her to have a really nice riding experience without always trying to keep up. If you are going to ride the bike around the neighborhood, or on nice bike trails it is great fun. If you are a serious rider, you will want something lighter in weight that has higher quality parts. Or you can do what I did and buy the bike and do very little up grades to make it even faster. I changed the gears from 14-28 to 12-21 and front 48 to 52 and change the tires from 700cx38c to 700x25c to make it more of a serious road bike. Which coast far less to do it this way then to buy at the bike store? It is perfect for what we wanted much better than I thought. I highly recommend the tire and tube up-grade. The bike looks much better without the mega white walls. I bought the replacement tubes and tires at the swap meet. The bike rolls much better and has more road feel with the new tires then the OEM 700x 38 tires. All and all this bike is great. And thanks Wal-Mart for have such a great bike to be able to buy, plus thanks to the staff working at Wal-Mart getting me my bike. Be safe and enjoy the ride. <>< mr wordy and small fry
The bike arrived at the store earlier than expected, which was nice. Have a big truck or a trailer to put it in because its a huge box. Get it home and start putting it together. Its mostly together already, but take it apart and start over because the bearings were all adjusted way too tight on mine. Make sure everything's greased up, true the wheels, and adjust and set up the brakes, and adjust the cable tension. If you don't know how to do it a real bike shop will do it for you for a price and save you the hassle and the headache of having something together wrong. Once together though, the bike is actually quite nice. It handles well, and is very stable. It is reasonably light for a tandem bike. Shifting with the grip shifters is okay, but not great. I was worried that the braking wouldn't be any good, because the brakes are just v-brakes. Braking so far hasn't been too bad though with proper set up. Gearing is low enough for hill climbs, and is high enough for zooming down the other side of the hill. The seats are hard, but not terribly uncomfortable, especially if you wear your bike shorts. I'm sure this tandem isn't as good as one from davinci designs, or santana, but those bikes cost 3000 not 300. For 300 bucks and a little elbow grease you get a decent tandem that is comfortable and capable. Dislikes so far are chain suck, which is when the chain doesn't completely disengage from one chain ring and go to the next when your shifting the front deraileur. Then the chain gets stuck between the chain stay and the crank.(messy) This is probably because of the sub par crank set. Oh well. One other thing i wouldn't have minded is 2 bottle bosses for each person, because i like long rides and i get thirsty. You can always add water bottle cages in other places i suppose though. Barrel adjusters somewhere on the brake cables would have been nice too. Oh and it came with a nice chip out of the paint which must have occured during shipping. If you know a thing or 2 about bikes, and are willing to put in some time getting it set up correctly, then i bet this bike will be just fine for you. If not, or if you want a seriously nice bike, then get one with higher quality components, put together already, and probably more expensive.
Kent 700c Tandem. First off, I purchased this tandem from Walmart based on the specifications on the website that lists this as an Aluminum Frame. Let me state the this model is NOT aluminum as listed, but just inexpensive and heavy steel. Kent does make an aluminum version of this exact frame under a different label, that costs a little more. I noticed that the website still has this incorrect information listed after being notified. Lets just say, I'm a little disappointed as I specifically purchased it for an aluminum frame. The bike itself was double boxed well. I ordered online and picked it up at the store. The bike went together well. You do need to note the the seatposts are different sizes but very close to one another, and to get them into their correct frame tubes. The bike looks great with the candy red paint and comes with two water bottle cages. The bike is only of fair quality, but kind of what you would expect for the $300 price tag. The frame rides fast and true. Nice to have road 700c tires instead of common knobby ones. Frame does feel rather sluggish in steering response, it doesn't flex much though, and that was a nice surprise. The brakes are the worst part of the bike. The road levers cannot take up all the brake cable slack with the supplied V-brakes. Even with the wheels true and the pads right next to the rims. Also the stem is too long and low, I'm about 5' 10". There is also a nonstandard handlebar dia that requires a special shim stem adapter. So plan on replacing the bar stem and brake levers to something better. The shifting is rather sloppy and the cranks have steel chain rings. All in all, I give it only a fair rating, as I need to improve the supplied brake levers and stem, fun for tooling around the neighborhood. Hope this helps.
Wow wheels true, shifting okay, frame solid but it's named Gran Concor RS and it's steel. If it had the Aluminum frame and a 45 lbs shp wt. I'd be giving all excellent scores. This has been a good learning experience. First ride on a tandem for us and we both want more, so it is a good ride and functional components. A good buy if weight isn't an issue.
The pros for this bike are low price, light weight, and stable ride. The cons are wheels not true, gears not adjusted, brakes out of adjustment, and loud drive train. A major adjustment will be needed before riding. the components are not top of the line but they get the job done. I recommend this bike if price is important, it is a very good bike compared to other bikes at the same price.
