carb was out of tune when i got it but you can you tube how to tune these it only takes a few minutes and after that it ran great with excellent power i put a carslile chain on it right off the bat because i have a little 235 and the chain on that was junk i put a stihl chisel and it cut about 3 times as fast so i did the same on this and it cuts like a beast no special tools needed for the carb on this unlike my 235 also the gas tank and oil reservoir are way bigger so you can cut about 3 times as much wood on a tank of gas i use my little one for trimming and this one for the anything 3 or 4 inches plus since it is way faster. i would recommend this over the 235 by far it is heavier but you can cut in 2 hours with this what you could in 3 to 4 with the other nice combo of power and speed i could only see wanting a bigger saw if you were a pro or used wood as a primary heat source for a person cutting just a couple truckloads a year this saw is a beast for its price to go much bigger you spend big bucks not sure about the price though when i got mine it was only like 280 and i had a coupon code so i got it for like 260 or somethin like that. but for the 20 bucks you would spend on a premium chain i would recommend puting one on right out of the box they cut way better than a factory chain. also if you are not comfortable tunig it yourself you can bring them to a small engine shop and get them done for about 35 bucks my 235 wasnt tuned right either and if a carb is running lean it will burn up your engine real fast so be sure to tune it or have someone tune it better a little rich than lean it should sputter a little bit when held wide open if its right if it just races it sounds great but it is too lean and will burn down fast there is a good video on you tube that matches up with the factory instructions.
Bought a refurbished Rancher to supplement my 20+ yr old Husqvarna 55 (which is still running well, but was showing some signs of age). The new saw was shipped promptly and arrived with a new blade and bar. The only signs of use were some light scuffs on the bottom of the plastic housing. A copy of the operators manual was included. The rancher started right up and I have run about 8 tanks of gas cutting fire wood. Compared to my old saw, this one is quieter and starts easier. Very happy with the purchase so far and hope it runs as trouble free as my Husky 55.
I had not heard of VMInnovations so I did some homework and I decided the price for this refurbised 455 Rancher was very fair and worth taking a chance. I am more than satisfied with my purchase! The shipping was outstanding!! I ordered it on 11/14/12 at 12:40pm and received it in Southwest Missouri on 11/15/12 by about 3:00pm!! I was amazed to say the least. You must remember however, this is a REFURBISHED saw not a new one. The saw I received was very clean and has many new parts, including the bar and chain, but you can tell it has been used in the past. I have not used this paticular saw yet but I used one like it years ago as a tree trimmer. I ran over the one I used back then with a 2 ton bucket truck while clearing a powerline right of way. It smashed it in the dirt, bent the handle and cracked some of the plastic but I was able to straighten the handle and continue using it for the rest of the week. Many of the negative reviews I have read lead me to believe that most problems mentioned are caused by operator error rather than faulty equipment, or unrealistic expectations of what was being purchased. If you want a new saw, go buy a new one and spend more than twice as much. I fully expect this saw to perform as good or better than I expect.
we live in alaska and burn ten cords of wood a year so we cut a lot of wood. My fourteen year old wanted a larger name brand saw but he did not want the big price. the saw he received was in mint condition and far exceeded his expectations.it is likely he will be a repeat customer.
Very nice saw, and still a very good deal. I would buy it again for certain. However, don't let the picture fool you. While the saw is refurbished, and will look like new, the bar you will get is a refurb as well, and arrives in handpainted primer gray. Mine was still in good condition. The chain also is a resharpened refurb. This is where I had my issue. While the blade was sharp it was stretched to the point that it would no longer fit on the saw. Thus, I had to buy a new one locally, for about $30. Again, I still love the saw, and don't think you can beat this deal, shipping is fast and everything else with it is great, just keep in mind you are not getting a shiny new bar and chain. Most importantly, that the chain, while sharp, might be stretched too far to work. For those curious, the numbers on the chain match the replacement, as does the link count. After this initial frustration, the saw is a beast, and starts and operates very well.
Received on time and as advertised. A few problem were caused by my misreading setup instructions. Once I was able to remove the clutch cover plate to install the bar and chain the machine worked very well. Found that the brake had to be forcefully disengaged in order to remove the cover plate. Once that was done I was able to complete the rest of the setup. On first use I was very pleased with the quality and power of the saw.
THE 455R is a RUGGED FORESTRY TOOL. MY 455R was used for PROFESSIONALLY FELLING ,LIMBING ,BUCKING. I like the RELIABLITY & QUALITY of the 455R, for ( ME ) a sutiable fit . -*DO NOT BUY BIG NAMES* NOT WHAT is popular . buy what will best fit (YOUR) needs .
I have been using chainsaws for over 30 yrs. I started climbing in New orleans in 83 for Davey tree. they used the old homelite xl 12's. I started using stihl in the late 80's but the last one I owned just did not measure up...I borrowed a Husky to finish up the job my stihl let me down on...When it came time to purchase I went with this saw for stump removals. It didn't cut as well as i liked so I ordered a skip tooth chain for it and it really does a great job. cuts wood like a hot butter knife on butter.
This saw needed carb replacement, which was covered under Husqvarna warranty. The saw:1) heavy, 2) cuts very well, 3) starts well (after carb replacement) and following directions EXPLICITY!, 4) has a lot of plastics, which may prove to be a durability issue over time. VMINNOVATIONs appears to be a reputable and customer oriented organization. I will use their services again.
Refurb Rancher 455. Starts easy, runs good, cuts fast and looks good. BUT: The chain adjuster screw is almost at maximum when a new chain is installed. I get less than two full adjustments before reaching the limit. Thinking that it might have a wrong part installed, I took it to a local dealer. They said all parts were correct and simply tried to sell me another chain. I replaced the bar, chain and sprocket with new but the problem remains. It is a great saw but I would expect to have to sharpen the chain several times before wearing it out. Instead I have to replace the chain after less than two tanks of gas. I will try to modify a bar to get full use of my 8 slightly used chains. There doesn't seem to be a way to contract Husqvarna directly to complain. Their website simply refers us to local dealers who don't really care.
