Good Hotspot and No Monthly Contract

The worst thing is simply getting it registered. The registration URL pages did NOT work and most of StraightTalk is only about phones. Finally, I got a support person on the line, but it took a long time to get all the required info into the system. After that, all was well. However, it took two tries to get a network password set so that no one could simply log on to the network and use up the minutes. I've wanted something like this for years, but finally I found it. No phone store will even talk about this.

After unsuccessfully attempts to get Internet in the remote area where I live, I was surprise that such a little gadget could get me what I was not able to get from the big servicers. I would surely recommend it to all, especially for people on the go or in remote areas.

Solid hotspot on the cheap

I've heard bad things about the straight talk hotspot that it is difficult to setup, slow, and just all around very bad. In all honesty, it's actually really good...for what you pay. To put it blunt, setup was absolutely terrible. In the quick start guide it said to connect to it and open your browser and go to 192.168.0.1, but when I tried it, nothing loaded. Then I looked in the thicker quick manual and that one said to visit 192.168.1.1 which did work. Then my browser asked for a username AND password, the guides only told you what the password was. After a few tries with no username, I tried "admin" (no quotes) as the username, that worked. I later downloaded the manual off straight talks website and that had everything correct (web address and a listed username). Once logged in, activation was very easy and so was changing the network name and creating a password. You will need to create a password as by default it's an open network meaning someone near you could connect and start using up your data. Once setup, speeds were really fast in my area, peaked at 2mbit/sec which is very fast for 3G and was a pretty consistent 1.2-5 mbit/sec download. After a few days I did noticed the download was really slow (around 0.2-4 mbit/sec), but a simple PRL update from the admin interface solved it. So overall, for the cost for data per month, this is a solid buy for a hotspot on the cheap. The only thing that I would like to see different is a password on the network from the factory and your remaining data balance in the admin interface as well as quick start guides that are all on the same page.

Good product....but GB's disappear quickly..

I was one of the last "dial up" customers and was forced to find another source for my internet. The "HotSpot" works as described....very good signal strength at my location....it is easy to operate....There is one serious drawback....Even though my old dial up was slower....it was unlimited....I started with a 1 GB card with the hotspot just to see how long it would last for me.....I don't do U Tube , any streaming video or movies....basically check my email, do banking and manage my healthcare on the VA website and play a few games on a social website. The ! GB only lasts me about 2 weeks.....and I was seriously limiting my time online as I saw how fast my card was being used up. Living on a fixed income I have to keep my bills down....so even though the Hotspot is good service it means alot less time online for me now.

however it depends on what area it is used in....I wanted it to use while at work but it is not close enough to get good coverage...it does work pretty good in town even though a little slow...so if you are in an area that gets good coverage it is worth it..

DO NOT BUY! Terribly SLOW.

Terribly SLOW performance for a 3G HotSpot. I anticipated data rates from 1.5Mbps-3Mbps. This device operated from 100Kbps-400Kbps, unacceptable even for casual web browsing. I connected with Tech Support via email, chat, and telephone. I was told that I should expect better performance, but no one could resolve or improve. 3G (and 4G) cellular service has strong signal in my area and there is no issue with other devices running on same cell towers. I am suspicious that the device or service is purposefully limited. I returned to the device and plan on using Verizon JetPack Prepaid.

DID NOT WORK

I had high hopes for this little device, but sadly it did not work as expected. Setting it up was frustrating and time consuming, and then it finally seemed like it was working. The speed however reminded me of the old 'dial-up' days, very slow. Then after a few days it just stopped working. I didn't do anything different. I tried a couple of things to fix it but to no avail. I even emailed Straight Talk customer service but they basically told me that it was to complicated to explain via email and that I should call in. At that point I said forget it. I returned to the item to the store and got my money back within 15 days.
