My 2.5 year old daughter grabbed this and kept saying, "open this, open this, open this." We opened it as soon as we got home, and she was already playing with it before we assembled the toy. It comes with a few pieces that you put together - one piece had a lil mole where you can push to the "ground" and it comes up again... reminds me of that arcade wack a mole game. Once assembled (you need 3 AA batteries) and such, both my daughter and my 8.5 month old son were playing with it. The daughter didn't appreciate the son's company at first, but she later accepted that he wanted to play with the toy with her. She was taking the flower shapes out and putting them back in. They each have their base shape (triangle, circle, and square) and their base color (purple, red, orange), and it says the shape or color when you lift it up and place it back into its place. There's also a bee, a mole, and 2 worms to push. The noises may sound very quiet if there's other noises going on, but it's perfect in a semi-quiet apartment. There are a few fruits and flowers with velcro that you can place on the felt butterfly background. It's very beautiful! The 8.5 month old loved to pull them off the felt, and the 2.5 year old loved placing them back on. Most cutey toys I've seen of the like contain sweets, such as candies and cupcakes. Sure, those sweets are super adorable, but I love that Little Tykes is using gardening and fruit for this concept. There is a flower mirror on one side, and unfortunately, it does come off easily, but it's meant to come off and put back on. Motor skills??? Overall, this is a nice playmat toy. Lots of potential to learn - practice motor skills, shapes, matching, vocab, etc. The original price of $40 does seem high, especially since it doesn't come with batteries (at least mine didn't), but most places had it for sale (currently $28-$29 at Walmart, but sometimes a dollar or 2 cheaper on amazon and toys r us), which isn't a bad price.
This is my child's favorite toy. I don't even put it back in the toy bin because my daughter will just take it right back out. Her favorite feature is the vibrating spider.
My little one loved the shapes and the vibrating spider.
This is a cute toy, but my 14 month doesn't quite understand the concept of gardening yet. I like that it has lots of components to it and is very engaging - it has shape sorter parts, a buzzing bee, worms to push up and down, a spider attached to a string that pulled and reels back up, a cute little hose that makes noise when you push it, velcro ish flower things that stick to the stand up back board, etc. However, like I said, my 14 month old doesn't appreciate it like it should be. He basically just pulls all the separate parts out and throws them around the room. He does like to press the things that make noises and light up though! Overall I'd recommend this toy to older toddlers.
