My son is a little too young to play with this, so I let my nieces play with it. It's so cute! It's almost exactly like the model train we had when I was a kid, and it's battery operated, so it's not a huge hassle. The track is sturdy, and it's just a fun way to spend an afternoon. I would recommend it.
This is my son's first train set and my first time assembling one. This only took 15 mins to set up. Product: Many life like and thoughtful design elements. The engine light and metallic paint make this thing stand out. Also, the train cars are very detailed. One coal car, one empty trailer car, one passenger car, an oil tank, and the engine. Each unique car adds real character to the train. Also, the tracks have a male and female end that makes it easy to understand how to place them together. You'll need to look at the website to mimic the design. I didn't see instructions for it. Assembly: You will need a very very small screwdriver to open the battery hold. Think of the same one you'd use to fix your eyeglasses. If you don't have one, this will be a deal breaker. Otherwise, you'd just need to set the cars on the tracks and not run it. Pros: Super cute, highly detailed. Consider: The track is sensitive and the engine is powerful. So, if it's not perfectly aligned, the train will derail. We have ours on hardwood flooring. I am not sure if it would work well on carpet. An older child or the adult collector will really enjoy this. It's a bit delicate for anyone under 10, who can't appreciate the details. When the rain is battery powered, it also makes train noises, fairly loudly.
This is a very cute little train set. The engine has a light and makes realistic train sounds. It's a little loud but not too loud. The train moves quickly in the tracks which can be switched from a large loop to a small circle. If you are planning on buying this for a child under 6, I highly recommend that an adult put the tacks together and place the train and cars on the track. They are made of very light and brittle plastic which could very easily be broken. Also, the track needs to be placed on a perfectly smooth surface or the cars will jump off the track because they're so light. A great product for the price, but very fragile.
According to the package this train set is for ages 3 and up. This website states it is good for 2 to 4 years olds. On another website I found that the Manufacturer states that it is good for 5 to 18 years old. I don't agree with any of them. I think it would be better for ages 8 and up. I say up because I am 59 years old and I did have fun playing with it. The problem is the train set itself. It states that the tracks snap together. They don't actually snap together at all. They just lay there together and come apart often. Kids younger than 8 will crawl on the tracks and this is one you can't do that. You must be very careful with it. The tracks are made of plastic and are very thin. If a young child puts pressure on them I can see them breaking. They would also pull apart all the time which would become too frustrating. An 8 year old and up will have more patience and take better care of it. It comes with a passenger car, oil tank, cargo car, coal car and engine car. These are also made very cheap. They are not very durable. Nothing in this set is durable. If a young child sits or steps on one of them they will more than likely break. Again, they are made of cheap plastic. It is very hard to keep the train on the tracks. It keeps derailing. You have to place the engine car on just right to get everything moving. It takes practice. There are a few pros. That is why I gave it three stars instead of one. The engine and cars are very detailed and look great. The engine lights up and sounds like a real train. You can hear the whistle too. One con on this is that it is very Loud. There is not a volume control. You cannot turn it down or off. I couldn't find a place to disconnect it either. The track is a very good size. I set it up on carpet and it did work. Really this is one of those that you set up and leave it alone. It is very finicky if you play with it. I do not recommend this train set. There are too many others out there better made.
This train set can be fun. It can also be frustrating. The track is easy to put together, but getting the cars together and on the track while they are still together can be frustrating. Each of the cars have both a hook and eye at each end. So you are trying to put the hook from the front car into the eye of the back car while at the same time trying to get the hook of the back car into the eye of the front car. I have included a picture. It can be done but I think it should be easier. Once we had it all set up and on the track there was a small problem turning it on while still on the track. It will take off the instant you flip the switch. So if you hold the drive wheels on the track when you turn it on it will jump off the track. After some learning it worked great and my great grand-daughter, who is 2 1/2 had, a great time. The only real problem was trying to stop her from grabbing it. It also makes standard train noises and it is a bit loud but playing with children and toys is usually loud anyway. So the frustration and noise doesn't seem bad once you see the joy on their little faces.
Derailment frequently. Can't go the inner circle. Missing a pair of wheel on the oil tanker before open box! No quality check at all!! I had to remove the bottom of the locomotive to get the middle pair of wheels and put it on the oil tanker. The middle axle is not touching the rail at all. The locomotive has no mid axle now (see pictures attached). Before the axle can be placed on the oil tanker, I had to adjust the with of the wheels. It's too narrow that the wheels are not correctly running on the rail. The battery cover uses a screw to close and lock. I wonder how many times can it be opened and closed.
This is the first train set I have ever had. I am sadly pretty disappointed. The tracks clipped together well in only 2 spots, where the changing tracks were, everywhere else wouldn't clip in. The trains would not stay on the tracks. I'm hoping it was user error but I tried for like 30 minutes to make it work. I tried with cars attached, with just the engine, every which way. Without the cars it would go around smoothly for 4 times, then end up off the track. I was getting frustrated and finally just put it away. Hoping next time I try it'll work better but for now this gets 2 stars. I would give it 1 but I think my kids will at least enjoy it on our tile floor and that this may have been user error. This is my honest review, I did receive this product for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. I will say this: if I can't figure it out, how will my kids figure it out? I anticipate them CONSTANTLY asking me to get the train back on the track :(
I was really looking forward to receiving this set that I requested to do a review for. I am not so pleased with the actual product. The overall look is very nice. Good color and details. I have a problem with the flimsy connections of both the rails and the hookups for the cars. I put this one together for my granddaughter. She is a dainty child and treats all her possessions with care, most any other child would have this set broken in pieces before I could finish this review.. A positive feature is that the tracks can be arranged in different configurations which is good for using it in different areas. This has been set up on my screened porch so she can be playing in fresh air and still be out of the harsh sun. I still need to do a little embellishing of the area to make it more attractive. My disappointment overwhelms any good points so I could not give a positive review for this as a toy. I think it would serve more of a decorative item. Such as an arrangement at Christmas among pine boughs. As previously mentioned the color and detail is attractive.
The Rocky Mountain Locomotive Train set is powered by two AA batteries. The battery compartment is secured by a small screw. A must safety feature if purchasing for small toddlers or children. After several tries on setting up the complete 53" track as pictured on the product box and having the train derail from switches not working properly and bent track that would not lay flat, I gave up and settled on the 30" round set up. The switch on one of the train switch tracks did not stay to either side but stayed in the middle causing the train to derail. Some of the track pieces would not lay flat even though I had them on a smooth flat surface. It was a bit trying keeping all the cars aligned on the rails while connecting them together. I only had two pieces of track that connected easily. The rest were more of a chore than having fun and again did not come apart easily either. It is fun to watch with the engine light and train sounds. I would not recommend this as a toy to be played with by taking apart and reassembling several times (as most toddlers and young children like to do), but rather as a stationary piece to be enjoyed in one place after being set up. I do not recommend this for toddlers to play alone with, but rather older children 8 years and older. I will be using under my Christmas tree once a year.
I thought this would be a perfect train for the Christmas tree, but I'm very disappointed. The train derails so easily and is incredibly loud. The cars rattle behind the engine and fall off the track almost immediately. The noise from that is loud. Not to mention, the fake train noises coming from the engine is obnoxious, too. My kids loved it, and I can see this breaking within a day. it's not of a quality to use for the Christmas tree. The batteries were not included and that was unfortunate. I cannot recommend this train, unless you are desperate for a gift for a child who would probably break it anyway.
