I have used Nair for a number of years because it leaves my legs smooth & hair free. It is messy so I would suggest using this in the shower. I personally use latex gloves also. Do not exceed the max time limit as this could leave your skin burned... As for the smell, it is unpleasant and I didn't smell even a hint of cucumber melon. However, it gets the job done.
