disclosure: “I am posting this review as part of my entry in Walmart's Holiday Sewing Contest.” I bought Brother JX2517 for $49.95 online on black Saturday for immediate pickup to make Alaskan kuspuks to distract myself from a hospital visit earlier that day. Needles to say, I was highly skeptical sewing 4 layers of high end quilting cotton with 2 layers of metallic ribbon at the seams, yet machine handled it shockingly well, punching through as if it were butter. Machine was working like a dream, and I finished one kuspuk on Saturday, made a second one on Sunday, and made the third kuspuk the following weekend. While pondering about a meaningful gift for a baby shower, I was inspired to sew a keepsake newborn kuspuk, and machine handled the zipper and double stitching to cover the raw edges beautifully. My coworkers were shocked when I told them I made my outfits on a $50 machine. Reliable and uncomplicated, Brother JX2517 is flying with me to Hawaii. Now that I got my sewing groove back, I will teach my teen daughter how to sew during the holiday break.
So, I had wanted a sewing machine for awhile but didn't want to fork over a lot of money since I wasn't sure how much I would actually use it. I saw this on the BF special and decided that for 49.99, why not. I read other reviews on it and it seemed like a great purchase so I took the plunge. I LOVE IT! Not only is it freaking adorable, it's light weight but sturdy. For a first timer, I had this machine set up within 20 minutes after watching a few YouTube videos. It's very easy to use and I cannot wait to unlock my inner creativity with this! Definitely happy with my purchase.
I am posting this review as part of my entry in Walmart's Holiday Sewing Contest. When I received this machine as a Christmas present, I had never sewn anything on a machine before. I had a friend show me once how to thread it, and then I was on my own. Teaching myself to sew on this machine was easier than I ever thought it could be. The controls are simple and easy to use, with a chart of the types of stitches printed on the side, as well as an easy to follow guide printed on the top for threading the machine. It also comes with a DVD that demonstrates the machine's functions and how to thread it. Setting the machine up to use could not be more simple, as it has one plug for the power and pedal cords. The size and simplicity of the machine has been ideal for me living in a small apartment setting, as I can easily move it or put it away if needed. Being able to sew clothes and costumes was a long-time dream of mine, but one that seemed out of reach without attending sewing classes. This machine helped me to achieve that goal on my own. Thanks to it's easy to use nature, my first time using this machine resulted in a costume that I was able to wear to a party. The photo below is me wearing my second project made on this sewing machine. I would highly recommend this to any beginner, even if you have never used a sewing machine before.
I took college courses for sewing and textiles, and the machines our college used were big, expensive and heavy-duty. Over the years, I began to assume that cheaper machines were no good, simply because I have never really seen anyone use a cheap machine. When I lifted this sewing machine off the shelf, I was immediately dismayed that it was so light. It was not what I was used to at all. In fact, I was able to carry the machine to the register fairly easily. I decided to gamble on this as I needed something straightforward and portable enough to get some projects done quickly, so that my home would look like a home again and not like a bad episode of HOARDERS. I had curtains all over the floor from being too long, and piles of expensive clothing that needed repaired. Ya feel me? Tens of unfinished projects laying about is not good for the psyche. So, with some hesitancy, I purchased the machine. I had it threaded and bobbined in absolutely no time whatsoever. What a delight compared to the machine I used before, where threading was an absolute nightmare. I tried all of the stitches on various textile scraps, thick and thin. i was shocked and impressed. And the machine is so light, I can sew any old place. This is not hyperbole. I have used the machine in the bathroom not wanting to take the curtains down, and also, JUST BECAUSE I COULD!! I have used this just about everywhere in this house where a project needed finished. My house was back to normal in less that a week. That was a good week. The old heavy duty Singer sewing machine from college, that I compare to the diva in the Phantom of the Opera, was immediately purged from the home. Seriously, I think about her when I think of that paperweight of a machine. The machine was indeed heavy and expensive, but taking it out was a total nightmare. It was loaded with features too complicated to use, and while it looked fancy, it worked terribly, and cost me over four hundred dollars. To maintain its uselessness, it needed repair twice at 90$ a pop. It was a non-stop drama machine. If you accidentally do something wrong, there was no forgiveness with it. AND IT WAS LOUD! This Brother whispers compared to that evil Singer. Even my Serger is more quiet than that Singer. This machine, in STARK CONTRAST TO ANY MACHINE I HAVE USED, IS WONDERFULLY EFFORTLESS TO USE. I feel like any idiot could operate this, that it is foolproof. Seriously. Never sewn before? Try it out. I would totally let a teenage child figure this out on his or her own. The DVD is plenty helpful. Never fear. Use some scrap cuts to start out on and set the tension to three. Then go from there. You can do it. I was so impressed by this machine that I bought a simple serger, also rather light for a serger, also by Brother for less than two hundred. I still cannot believe that I have a serger (this was for the rich kids.) I love these machines. You would not believe these work horses. They are my true loves. I sew everyone's pants. I reupholstered a chair and a couch. I fixed some thirty outfits (I love clothes.) This machine made sewing so easy, I could try more complicated things like gathering and such, which I knew how to do enough to pass the course years ago but I definitely dreaded it at the time. I fixed a boyfriend's patio chairs. I make my young daughter robes and all kinds of costumes. Even in March. People are so impressed, and it is so easy! This is what sewing is about. Cheap, fast and productive. This machine will not let you down. And it is small enough to tuck into a closet when you have company. And it even has a super convenient handle for carrying! They thought of everything! There are many videos available which are helpful and I believe they are on YouTube. You have a variety to choose from so do not watch the annoying ones. The only thing that could make this better is a nice cocktail. My only recommendation is to keep a can of compressed air around to refresh the bobbin enclosure when you change the bobbin. Don't over do it, but do tweeze out any visible threads. This will extend the life of the machine. Also, be sure to use the proper feet for whatever project you are doing (however- I do admit I used a zipper foot for over a month out of sheer laziness) and tune it up regularly, at least 1-2 times a year if you sew a lot, less if you do not sew much. There are cheat sheets on how to tune your machine and foot guides online to keep as aids for all of your sewing endeavors. I wish that I had these resources when I was a student! :) Oh! And all the low-shank feet accessories will work with this machine, and they are super cheap here at Walmart Love it. Best of luck! Fantastic deal.
I am posting review as part of my entry in Walmart's Holiday this Sewing Contest. I bought this machine about 5 years ago to make curtains for a daycare I owned. I put it away for a couple of years, and pulled it out 2 years ago to make Christmas gifts. I have made about 20 quilts since then. Great machine for beginners, and experienced sewers. I would be great if they added a "design idea" brochure in the box. Great machine and excellent priced. I am attaching a picture of an "Attic window" quilt I just finished. YES you can quilt on it also.
I am posting this review as part of my entry in Walmart's Holiday Sewing Contest. I used this sewing machine for simple projects and now using for complicated dress sewings! As a beginner, works very well for me. Also bought two more to gift my aunts, overseas. They also liked it very much. Great price, great value!
Even though this is a great little machine, I'm writing this review as an entry for the Holiday sewing contest. My mom (who is a lifetime sewer) purchased this machine as a replacement for her singer that needs repair. She likes it so I bought one too. Works great for simple sewing, mending clothes, and a short women's never ending job of hemming pants! Works well on dress pants and jeans. Why spend hundreds of dollars on a fancy machine with stitches you'll never use? The JX2517 will perform well for most of your sewing needs.
I am posting this review as part of my entry in Walmart's Sewing Contest. You will not regret buying this cute, lightweight workhorse! I randomly decided that I wanted to really learn to make my own clothes and researched about starter-friendly machines that would allow me to grow and sew more complicated garments down the line. At first I ordered a Singer "heavy duty" sewing machine and the first night I got it, I couldn't get it to work. Long story short, I tried everything under the sun to just get the thing to start sewing two thin layers of cotton. No such luck. I went as far as going to a local repair shop later that week, quickly realized how ridiculous I was being, and promptly retuned it! I was a little frustrated and discouraged, needless to say. The next day I went to my local Walmart and picked up this baby and I haven't had one regret since! It comes with an in-depth manual and a quick reference guide for those who only need to quickly familiarize themselves with this particular machine. It already came with a bobbin of white thread loaded in the machine and ready to go! If you want to start sewing with another color, there are a few extra bobbins provided. I was able to wind my first bobbin in under five minutes. The instructions and directions on the machine are no nonsense and very easy to follow. Kids in elementary school to adults will be able to follow the instructions with little problem. And, if you're not sure, there's an instructional DVD that comes with your machine and plenty of YouTube videos that show you how to operate your JX2517. The process of setting up this machine was a breeze! It has 17 different stitches, like the straight and zigzag stitches, the satin stitch, blind hem stitch, and even an overedge stitch (if you don't have a serger, you don't need one with this stitch). You might think there aren't many stitches like with another, more expensive machine, but trust me when I tell you these will be more than enough. I've worked with industrial sewers and sergers (with all the bells and whistles) and I have rarely used anything other than the straight and zig-zag stitch. You also get a variety of other accessories, like the zipper foot and the buttonhole foot. Why spend more money when you can get what you need for less? This beauty is so quiet while sewing! I've spent many nights patching up holes in shirts, pants, undergarments, anything I could get my hands on. My neighbors weren't even aware I had a machine until I told them. It won't disrupt others from what they're doing, the next room over either. As a student surrounded by other grad students, that is a necessity. The light on this machine is perfect for sewing in a low-light setting and at night. All I use is the machine light and a small lamp and I don't have to squint or struggle to see what I'm sewing. I can control the speed of the foot pedal with how lightly or hard I press down. It's convenient when I need to control the direction and movement of the fabric, especially with slippery fabrics like satin. On the other end, I've gone through three layers of denim quickly and with no problems. The machine didn't clog up or sputter once. But, please note that you may need to use a certain type of needle to accommodate the fabric you want to sew. I used a denim needle, size 16, in my case. One reason a lot of people's needles break while sewing is because they are using the wrong needle size. Your machine comes with a universal size 14 needle, which will work for most general light-weight to mid-weight fabrics. I decided I wanted to be Little Miss Muffet for Halloween and sewed the whole costume in under 2 hours. I got compliments the whole night and was proud to say I made it myself! I've always wanted to say I made something I'm wearing as I am completely self-taught. Now I can! I usually worry about quality and pricing but this is one machine that was worth the price and didn't break the bank! As I'm becoming more experienced with garment-making, I don't see myself buying another machine anytime soon. I highly recommend this machine for beginners and more experienced sewists alike! P.S. Please only turn the handwheel TOWARDS you (counter-clockwise) to prevent your machine from jamming the thread or getting out of tune.
Had this for awhile and I've made a bunch of baby stuff but this year I decided to try something new so I made the whole family and some friends and other family members as well all new custom stockings! They turned out super cute! I'm ready for un upgrade so I can embroider the names on the stockings and other gifts!
Great for the price.
