This is the best thing since sliced breads. We have a standard yard (about one-third acre). We ran the perimeter wire one afternoon (one-time setup), which was quite easy. The robomower does a fantastic job!!! We have such a busy life with kids. One more chore is under control. It is a BIG HELP! Thank you.
I purchased the mower as a Christmas gift for my husband. Living in Florida, it seems like you must mow your lawn weekly. My husband complained lawn work ate up one day of our weekend. Now we're still learning, but it looks like we can set the mower out every 3-4 days. My husband LOVES his new toy. It's not cheap, but compared to a lawn service... it will pay for itself in a year.
I was in the market for a new riding lawn mower and ran across the ad in the Wal-Marts online catalog. Not taking it seriously at first, I started thinking about all the maintenance required on my last rider. So I did my reserarch on the internet and decided to purchase it a couple of weeks later. The unit works as advertised. It initailly had to cut thru some tall grass but I had only a few problem spots. Fully charging the unit takes about 20-24 hours and I will alternate cutting the fromt and back yards about every 3 days. This keeps the grass about the right height for mulching. They estimate that the mower uses about 7-9 dollars a season of electricity. I would pay that much for a single tank of gas in the rider. A couple of notes. You will still have to weedeat the perimeter of the yard especailly along the fence. And the unit comes with 500 feet of perimeter wire, which wasn't enough to cover both front and back yards. No problem though as you can get 14 gage solid conductor wire at Home Depot fairly cheap which works just as well. All in all, I' am really pleased with the unit The wife and I will watch it mow the front yard in the evelings from our lawn chairs and enjoy all the stares and comments from passersby. One final thought: there are a number of sites on the internet that sell this same unit but I figured that it had to pass significant product testing if Wal-Mart sold it.
The perimeter wire set up was arduous due to many yard plantings, I have to trim some areas the robo can't reach, had to but 14 ga. wire to finish that job, now I finally get the benefits. It works fantastic and I have time to get other things done, it works a solid 3 hrs and does my 1/4 acre lawn areas front, side and back.
I was skeptical at first, but after turning him loose in the yard for a few hours at a time, couldn't live without it. Hardest part is setting up the perimeter. It doesn't come with enough perimeter wire or stakes, so be prepared to buy #14 wire at Lowes. After the initial setup, I just watched it the first few times to make sure he didn't wander down the road or anything. Now I just turn him loose and go back inside. Best investment I've made in a long time.
I have owned an RL850 for 5 years. In time, I've purchased 2 battery sets (Now $250), a charger (~$100) and a perimeter switch ($95). Unfortunately, the electronics died on me last week and the repair bill is more than the cost of a self propelled gas mower. So the cost of cutting the grass for me was about $2000, or about $400 a year. If you compare the cost of it to pushing a gas mower, then you will be disappointed. If you compare it to a yard service, then it pays for itself, but it's not a hands off thing. Not liking to cut grass, I though it was a resonable compromise. In terms of cutting, it's fair (but the software might be better now), but don't expect a perfect cut if your yard is irregular shaped. Your yard also has to be smooth -- any ruts will cause it to get stuck.
