When our old thermometer that hung outside bit the dust, I went online to find a replacement. I didn't really want to spend 20 bucks on a thermometer, but after reading lackluster reviews on the old fashioned thermometers available, I started to look at the digital ones. This one is great for the price. It comes with a stand for the indoor piece, and the outdoor piece has screws to attach it to a wall outside (though I just set it on our window sill on the back porch, which has a roof, and it seems to do fine there). The only trouble I had was that the indoor piece did not get a reading from the outdoor sensor right away, but I just took the batteries out and put them back in like the instructions said, and it worked. One thing I liked about this model compared to other ones is that it didn't have a lot of buttons or numbers on the front, just the time, indoor temp, and outdoor temp. That makes it easy to glance at and see the temperature.
We live in northern Alaska so this thermometer has seen temperatures to about - 30 degrees so far.. It is supposed to go down to -40 or something like that. It seems to but we don't really know because it doesn't send a signal when it is colder than -15 and it is hard to read out the window. It is about 5 degrees off but this may be because we have gone from hot to cold (like 75 degrees to -15 degrees) too fast or because it is just outside our window.
I was not too pleased that it lost outside signal a couple of times, after removing all batterys it reset itself.
I've had this for about 9 months. It's no good. Pick a different model and probably from a different company. The outdoor and indoor temps are not calibrated. Even when both are sitting side by side, they read a few degrees differently. Battery changing is a severe headache. I'm a tech guy and can do most anything, but when I need to change the batteries.....it's a chore. I have to get out the manual and walk thru the steps several times before they are set up correctly. The transmit and receive works horribly. Sorry I spent the money on this one as I'm now shopping for another model.
tried several locations for the outdoor unit and it was consistently inaccurate. If it was in the sun, it was off as much as 30 degrees. If normal conditions, nothing extreme, it was consistenly 5-7 degrees higher than 2 mechanical thermometers in the same vicinity, and about the same from the local tv weather reports for our area. If need something to count to know the temperature if you may encounter ice, or need a coat, etc. then pick something else.
