believe it or not the betta actually comes from rice patties in asia where they are used to being in small cramped conditions. i would rather see them in this with adequate lighting, then in a small bowl you can buy in the floral department. especially the vases with plants in the top that block off their oxygen supply and eveentually kill them. i have multiple fish tanks at home and have had all sorts of fish and see no problem with this product. perfect for a small space, like an apartment or office. my dad loves his in his office. great cheap gift idea. throw a picture, a little gravel a decoration and call it a day. :-)

Have you actually ever SEEN a rice paddy?

They're quite large. They're "small" only compared to oceans and most ponds. They are typically more shallow, but this varies depending on location. They are also able to travel from one rice paddy to another with fluctuations of water levels(heavy rains, etc) that keep the water from becoming stagnant. So, no, this doesn't make an adequate housing tank for any kind of fish, betta or otherwise. They are tropical. This tank doesn't have a heater and adding even a mini one would further cramp your fish. Filtration minimizes the times you actually need to change water, and anyone who has properly cycled a fish tank with a well seeded filter full of all the necessary beneficial bacteria should understand that dumping all the water at one time is never a good idea. Hence the almighty partial water change.. which isn't happening in confines such as this. You also have to keep in mind that while you may not think your fish looks cramped or unhealthy, they often do not live as long or suffer from ailments you are unaware of. Ailments that often cause a lot of stress. Stress is the number one factor in fish infections and death and while it may take some time to show visibly, it's usually present in less than ideal situations. There's nothing wrong with making your tank aesthetically pleasing.. but it's the fish that should be the centerpiece without making them a mere decoration used to adorn desks. This tank is a cute idea in the sense that you can personalize it, but at least 2.5 gallons filtered and heated would make it way cuter. If you want something purely to decorate a desk.. buy some pottery.

Terrible idea to put any fish in this!

This is really ridiculous. I would have given it no stars if I could. No fish should be housed in 5/8 gallon of water. Just because Bettas can survive for a short time in little water and poor water conditions does not mean they should. And anyone using the rice paddy argument has obviously never seen a rice paddy and does not know a thing about bettas. Want a beautiful happy betta? Give them space, clean water, healthy food, and a warm temperature. Thats something you can't do with this "tank".

Not an appropriate home

This tank is far too small to be housed for a Betta or any other small fish for that matter. Bettas require a minimum of one gallon of water and also come from a tropical area of the world. They need temperatures of 76-84*F and it is impossible to heat a tank this small. Bettas DO NOT come from small water filled holes or hoofprints from oxen. They are bred and raised domestically in tanks and would not survive in the wild and WILL NOT survive in this tank. Do you and your fish a favor and do research before buying this tank.

WAY too small for a Betta

This may seem cute but a Betta should have at least a one gallon tank if not bigger. This would be very cruel to a living being.

Do not keep any fish in this small of a tank. Just because the fish is alive does not mean it is thriving. At least give it a 3 gallon space, minimum! Proper maintenance requires a filter, a heater, a bubble bar, hiding places, etc. This is not the tank for that.
