I'm not vegetarian, but i do like to eat vegetarian options when they taste good. This tempeh tastes great. It has a slightly nutty flavor that pairs well with many things. I've used it to replace chicken in a salad, fried it to make tempeh chicken fingers, and I've used it in tikka masala. It tastes great in everything I've tried it in. Unlike tofu, it has both more flavor and texture which makes for a much more enjoyable meal.
Tempeh is an acquired taste. It's best to thinly slice it and marinate it in either BBQ sauce or wing sauce and then air fry until crispy. It's also really good cut into thick slabs , coated in bbq sauce and grilled .
I just recently discovered tempeh and now I can't get enough of it. I cut it into pieces, marinate it in soy sauce and Liquid Smoke and then sauté it for a few minutes. Then I add it to my salad or grain bowl. Love it!
All the people who left negative reviews have clearly never eaten, prepared, or read up on how to prepare packaged tempeh. The color is from the fermentation, which a 10-second google search would have told you. Walmart doesn't sell expired tempeh. That being said, Walmart has stopped selling tempeh which is a huge bummer. They used to be the most reliable store to buy from. Please bring back more vegetarian and vegan protein options that aren't just faux meats, WM!
I was sold this tempeh about two and a half months past its sell by date. It is growing black mold around the edges of the tempeh. This item will be returned for an exchange. Walmart needs to manage their quality control better concerning their Vegan products section.

It smells and tastes so bad

Wow! So another rotten item on this order prior to it's expiration/best by date (9/27). I was slightly skeptical before cooking the tempeh because it was a tad bit slimy, but since it wasn't expired and smelt ok I thought maybe that was due to the cultures/fermentation (I'm more familiar with tofu than tempeh but tofu was not available). My feeling is that this tempeh was not stored properly (I was a purchasing manager for a restaurant supplier and therefore understand the simplicities of following food safety regulations and the significance of not serving/selling compromised food). After spending 1-2 hours preparing myself a healthy meal with what I could use from my grocery order from Walmart, I took a small bite of the tempeh to try the sauce I wasted time making from scratch, and instantly tasted a sour, bitter, chemical-like flavor. The chemical taste was the most concerning as it lingered in my mouth even after several attempts of washing it out. The tempeh was clearly bad. I can only imagine how sick I would be right now had I eaten what I originally planned and cooked. More time, money, other products used to prepare the meal, down the drain. Never mind the potential risk of food borne illnesses. Who cares about that right.
