Oct,2007 Elk Hunt, Colorado Rocky Mountains We had a friend/hunter who had gotten himself lost in the rocky mountains of Colorado in our hunting unit. A blizzard blew in and it happened so fast. He was trying to make it back to the 4 wheelers but instead got stuck in the blizzard. He was 4 miles from my location. As we both carry the rino 120 but his screen froze with ice and could not see due to the freezing temp and he was panicing from being lost at night. He began to freeze because of the -25 weather. When he would cry through the radio I was getting his exact location updates and I new exactly were to go to get him. I had formed a search party and began looking for him. Anyone who knows these mountains should know that it does not take long to freeze out there if not prepared for it. He had suffered from hypothermia and frost bite. At the time of arrival I did not know if he would pull through. We got him to our base camp and warmed him up and drove him to the hospital. This was an experience that I do not want anyone to go through. I will tell you this, If it wasn't for the rino 120 we would of lost a great friend and hunter. I want to thank Garmin for making a great product and saving my friends life. Please think about this next time you go out to enjoy the mountains! Carry a Garmin 120 Thank You,
Haven't used it much. Took it out with my wife horse riding. After we were maybe two miles away from each other, couldn't communicate, so the distance they claim as a two-way radio is definitely not as advertised. Downloaded maps after spending two hours on the phone to Garmin. Their Customer Service leaves something greater to be desired. GPS seems to work, but it takes some time to understand how to use it, not as user friendly as I thought it would be. Overall, not a bad product, but still quite pricey if you're just using it for a two-way radio.
Bought for kids to use communicating with rino 530hcx. Screen is small and very hard to see in daylight conditions. Works well with 530 as far as peer to peer reporting, although difficult to make out with 120. Has serial port, instead of USB connection, which is a pain with most modern computers. Cheaper than buying another 530, in the long run. FRS radio is not the greatest. Works for what I bought it for, so can't complain too much.
