Very accurate, and FAST access

This is a very accurate unit. The initial access and then the warm startup time is unbelievable. Even inside the car covered with a coat the unit still picks up enough signal to give a position plot. For the money this one can't be beat.

excellant product, especially for hunting

I use the Garmin eTrex Venture HC GPS Receiver for hunting. One public lands such as Bodcau in North Louisiana. After finding scrapes I am able to go back to the same spot even before daylight to hunt that area. It takes the guess work out knowing exactly where I am in the woods especially on cloudy or rainy days.

This does what is advertised and is the best bottom of the line color screen handheld you can get. Dont expect anything extra. Its just for basic navigation. Unless, like me, you just want the color screen you can get the ETREX H for about $80 and it will do what you need.

Great Handheld Navigator

The Garmin eTrex Venture HC is the best handheld GPS unit I've seen on the market! It automatically finds itself on startup so initiating the device is no longer required. I can use it indoors or outdoors with very little difference in signal quality. The speed tracking is very accurate (which can be useful on the highways)! I have recommended this unit very highly to everyone looking for a GPS unit.

Great little unit with a little price tag.

I purchased this unit once I got involved in Geocaching. This gps has not let me down once. It's accurate and very reliable although the base map has very little detail. I was a little frustrated the first time i booted it up because of the lack of detail on the map software. I upgraded the base map to a more detailed mapsource software map and have been extremely pleased so far. Loading Waymarks is easy and downloading geocaches from geocaching.com is a breeze. My only gripe is with the compass. The compass will only show you which direction you're traveling if you are moving. I recently took it on a hike to the tri-state marker which is where Massachusetts, Rhode Island & Connecticut all meet and this little unit got me there and back to my car without a hitch. (Approx 4 miles). If you are looking for a basic gps and don't want to spend alot of money, Buy this GPS!

Need additional software

You also need to purchase additional software for more than $100 in order to actually use the GPS. Bought this as a gift and had no idea that the software was needed - not mentioned in product description. It says that maps are included, but they won't help you actually do anything and aren't detailed - include highways and interstates, nothing more. Purchased the software and my husband says he likes the GPS.

Great GPS for your adventures!

My Garmin Venture works well. I still do not know all that it can do. I needed it for the Everglades Challenge 2012 as the check points were waypoints for the location of the Checkpoint lock box. My inexperience with GPS and other issues forced me to withdraw after the start. As a result I have some recommendations for any one considering purchasing one of these items. 1st purchase your Garmin early and use it often to familiarize yourself with all the function keys. 2nd please understand that the view screen is small and therefore can be difficult to read especially it you have a lot going on at the time (like waves over the bow). 3rd the system to enter the waypoints does not really allow you to enter new waypoints if you need to make a change in you trip/adventure.

I think this will be a great GPS unit when I spend the extra 250 dollars buying maps to make it actually useful, but for now it is useful for geocaching and that's about it. I really thought the basemap would have a little more detail, but you get what you pay for.

Maybe I was expecting too much?

I'm a novice hiker and got seriously lost in the woods during a torrential downpour and lightening storm a couple weeks ago. I decided a handheld GPS would be a solution for avoiding a repeat of this experience. I have an 5-year old Garmin for my car which works flawlessly, so the Garmin brand is the first I considered in a handheld GPS. Perhaps I'm naive, but I was expecting more than this unit delivers. I can't understand all the glowing reviews from others on this site. I'm a Mac owner, and nowhere on the box (or this website) is there any indication that this unit only works with Microsoft OS PCs. It's not until you unpack it that you see the "Not Mac compatible" disclaimer on the Trip & Waypoint Manager CD inside. I don't think this would normally be much of a problem as the unit lacks the storage capacity for too many downloads anyway....and a memory card slot. However, it's also lacking the map detail that's displayed on the box (which the fine print says is optional....would you believe for more than the price of the GPS?!) I consider this deceptive. I've tried it out on short hikes a couple of times, and in my estimation, with virtually no map detail, this thing is basically an excellent pedometer. I want to read the main manual to see if I'm missing something here (I've only read the Quick Start Guide) but I think I'm going to be taking it back. My intention in purchasing a handheld GPS was to see exactly WHERE I am, WHERE I want to go, and HOW to get back! The blank "base map" that's included with the unit is of no help with any of these goals. I might also want to use it to navigate the streets while exploring an new city. I've carried the car unit in my hand to do this, but it's clumbersome (it's a first-generation and the size of a miniature B&W tube TV) I understand that TOPO maps are available for purchase for the unit, but the prices I've seen are more than I paid for the GPS! If I purchased the detailed maps, how am I supposed to load them onto the GPS when it's not Mac-friendly? I think Mac incompatibility is more of an oversight with this model, than the absence of useful map detail. I will ask if many others have been returned for this reason when I take mine back. I suspect there will be a few as I know of three co-workers who recently became so frustrated with problems they were having getting Vista to run properly, they switched to Macs.
